Does anyone know if you pay alot more money if you book a trip with a travel agent rather on your own??

It depends on the agent, the discounts out there, and the type of trip you are trying to book (i.e. cruise, etc). Which is why it is worth pricing both on your own and with a TA.

I would try to price out the trip yourself then talk to a few TA's and see what they can offer. They may know better hotels for better prices or have access to discounts you won't get on your own.

I always use an online agency to book my cruises as they get bulk (group rates) so they are much better than if I booked straight thru the cruiseline. Disney however - I do some research and follow when codes come out. I have tried to get a TA to beat or come close to my price and they can't do it. However when I travel to Europe I find they can often do better than I can do on my own.

Ive always found expedia to have better packages... I alway check with travel agents to get their prices as well. Ive never book with an agent because I can ALWAYs find better deal online.

I do think that you can find good bargains on your own, but I do believe that a TA is paid their commission by the hotel - and maybe airline too?

Airlines do not pay commissions. TA receive commissons from car, hote, cruise, tour and packages. Depending on how much business they give that particular vendors determines their commission amount. The average industry commission is 10% of the base rate only

Re: Travel Agents

I've booked trips on my own and using a TA. Lately I have gotten better deals using the TA. FM if you would like a recommendation!
