Traveling at 36 weeks/Family Vent!

Ok, so I was told by my doctor not to travel after 36 weeks more than an hour from my hospital.

Easter is when I am 36 weeks, 4 days. I live on Staten Island and my parents are hosting Easter in Montauk at their house (they also have an apartment in Manhattan that they live in in the winter) and everyone thinks I am nuts that I can't go!

Now, the trip is easily 3 hours one way and DH has to work, so it would mean me going by myself and then driving home by myself.

Am I the only one whose doctor told this to? And WHY can't they just lay off me and make things easier on me for ONCE?

ETA: ALSO my retardly late shower is the following Saturday, so I will see everyone then!!

I personally would not go, especially with you having to go by yourself, without DH. They'll have to deal with it!! Chat Icon

Since you have to go by yourself, I wouldn't go. That is a long drive to be alone. Sorry your family is being a pain.Chat Icon

I agree! They should be more understanding. Not only will you not have your hospital nearby, you'll have to drive by yourself??? I say stick to your guns!

I don't blame you - especially the fact that you have to drive all by yourself end-to-end on the island. No way..I'm worried about you just thinking of it. Chat Icon

I wouldnt go - you never know what can happen and that is A LOT of driving for a pregnant person - heck, it's a lot of driving for a non pregnant person - 3 hours each way?

Blame your doctor and tell your family to back off! (easier said than done - I admitChat Icon

What your doctor told you is standard.

Driving for that long, at that stage, might be very uncomfortable.

Just blame it on your doctor and tell them he is too afraid you will be too far away if you decide to go early.

ETA: Most doctors say this because of insurance coverage. If you deliver at another hospital with another doctor it can really screw up the insurance coverage. My friend lives in Western MA but used to commute into Boston one day a week (2 hours each way). As soon as she reached a certain week her doc said she couldn't travel because she would be too far away from him to deliver the baby and she was pre-registered at another hospital closer to home. I think the standard distance is 2-3 hours.

I wouldn't go if I was by myself. I might go if DH could be with me, but definitely not by myself that far into the pregnancy. They should understand that.

I would not go by myself. Can you ask your Mom to do Easter at your place instead?

I definately wouldn't go. I'm not even going to Easter myself because my MIL wants it at her house and she has cats. (WHich I'm deathly allergic to) I told her I couldn't visit during the pregnancy because I won't be on my meds. And at that point I will be in only my 20th week.

Good luck sticking to your guns!!!!

No way - not worth the risk of:

1. going into early labor so far from home

2. getting into an accident

3. a multitude of other things that can happen if the car breaks down, etc.

I would not go.

I wouldn't go.

I'm having a similar issue because my NY shower is at 36 weeks.

It's a two hour drive for me WITH DH and it makes me nervous thinking about it.

I can't imagine being able to handle a 3 hour drive without him.

I would hope your family understands!! Chat Icon

My doc said the same thing. He said it wouldn't be bad, just if i did go into labor i would be in a hospital i am not familiar with and a doc that didn't know me.

I was as far along as you last year around easter, I live in CT, and everyone lives on LI, I didn't go to NY for the holidays. I made my parents come up here, and we celebrated easter together with my bro's IL's.

My DH is jewish, so we celebrated Passover here as well.

I don't think it's the unfamiliarity, its the fact that your DH wouldn't be there nor would it be too easy for him to come see you while you're there which could be anywhere from 2-4 days. Plus, your have to worry about whether your insurance covers the other hospital & doctors. Too much involved to be worth the trip.

I should clarify-Even though doc said that, I totally wouldn't go after 36 weeks, whether or not DH was with me or not.
It's a 2 hour trip to LI for me, even after i had DD, i still don't go down very often.Chat Icon

Check with insurance company, my insurance company considers anything pg related an emergency if you are out of state-bleeding, labor, etc, and everything is covered.

Even if i did travel after that time, i grew up on LI, so even what doc said, wouldn't apply to me, cause i would either go to Good Sam or Southside if i went into labor on LI.

I love my hospital and doc up here though, i wouldn't chance anything.

with DD the last time i was on LI i was 34 weeks pg and didn't go down again until she was 8 weeks old.

I agree. People forget that "anything can happen" and what a pain it will be for you in the end if you have to use another hospital/dr, etc all for some chocolate bunnies! Also, having traveled a long distance in a car nearly that far along in the past, it's miserable and I seriously don't recommend it.

I feel the same way. I think I would go - or at least play it by ear.

Could you suggest to your mom to have it the week before. I know that it's not the same on the calendar, but it's all about celebrating and the meaning in your heart.

Have Easter the week before? No. They will be away, their 35th wedding anniversary is March 25th and they will be away from the 24th until the 2nd.

I think I would actually be excited about going (I love being in Montauk) if DH could drive me, it is a daunting drive by yourself, and if DH had any type of time off, we could go out on Friday and stay a couple of days which would be lovely. I also don't want to take the Jitney because of the slight fear of me going into labor and not having ANYTHING with me.

Mainly I just wish they would understand, I mean, my doctor is talking induction on April 18th and my shower is the 14th, so traveling the weekend before that would be tough (and I will still be working too)
