Trouble switching from Alimentum to whole milk...bad gas issues...any advice?

DD has been on Alimentum since she was 2 months old...and she's done great!

We tried to transition her to milk at 12 months, and it didn't go well...she had terrible gas/gurgling in her stomach. At the time ped suggested trying soy...so we did...and nothing got any better...so we decided to wait until 15 months.

We started Monday with 3/4 formula and 1/4 milk...and both monday night and last night, she struggled to stay asleep, and I could hear her stomach gurgling as she tossed and turned in my arms, grimacing and crying...

Has anyone had trouble with their DC? How long should we wait to see if she'll regulate?

Anyone have any words of wisdom?

Re: Trouble switching to milk

Poor little girl! I wish I had words of advice.

Maybe add 'Gas' to the title in your post, so people know it's not just a 'doesn't like milk' issue.

Or maybe try a post with the formula name and problems switching to whole milk. Chat Icon

Re: Trouble switching to milk

I would ask the ped for a consult with an allergist. My cousin never outgrew her milk allergy and she is now 13.

I have a ped appointment on Monday, so I will ask about this...

I should add, she has had yogurt and cheese before (a lot actually) and has had no problem...

I don't know if it's the lactose, the milk proteins or the fat...I've debated switching to low fat milk (my aunt did with my cousins) but I know the peds like them to be on whole milk...

DD was Alimentum from 2 months old as well.

We transitioned over to whole milk very very slowly. It probably took us over a month to fully transition over. DD did have some "poopie" problems initially when she was on 100% whole milk, so we gave her 2oz of pear juice 2x a day (per our Dr's orders), and that seemed to help. She has absolutely no problems with milk now, and we don't have to give her pear juice anymore either.

She does have alot of gas, but it does not seem to bother her.

I'm not sure, but you may have to just stick with it so that her body gets used to it. If there is a lot of switching back and forth, her body won't get used to the milk at all.Chat Icon

Re: Trouble switching from Alimentum to whole milk...bad gas issues...any advice?

My DD was on Neocate since 5 weeks old.
At 1 year we tried her on regular Similac but she broke out in hives, so back on Neocate she went.
At 15 months we started adding 1 oz of milk at a time in her bottles of neocate. We did this extremely slow so her tummy can get used to milk. We only upped an ounce of milk every 2-3 weeks.
Now at 18 months DD is almost taking all milk successfully (knock on wood).

MIL did this for DH when he was little, he also had a milk protein allergy.

I would try a wean really slow.
