ttc and exercise
just wondering your thoughts on exercising and trying to conceive. i am a runner, i run 6 days a week on average 4-6 miles a day. my friend, who is pregnant, told me if i am trying to conceive i should cut my exercise in half. she said her doctor told her when she was trying that she should do that. she said there is no scientific evidence to prove it, but it is reccommended that you slow down and not put so much stress on your body. I thought exercise was a good thing, but I don't want to jeopardize our chances of trying to conceive. i don't know what to do.
any thoughts?

Re: ttc and exercise
I think there are probably more pros than cons to exercise while TTC. Her body is different fom yours and her doctor will tell her something different from what your doctor tells you.
When I told my doctor I was working out while TTC he saidi t was a good thing. Then again, I am not a runner and I dont do high impact exercise.
The bottom line is, the healthier you are when you are TTC and pregnant, the chances are that your child will be healthy as well.

Re: ttc and exercise
i just posted something similar a few weeks ago. I am concerned because i notice i spot more when i do harder abs type exercise like pilates and i take a class in NYC that is very core focused with heavy abs work. I have not been as concerned with cardio. I think that running 6 miles at a clip is probably not that bad. i wouldnt recommend training for the marathon and TTC, but as long as you are getting your period regularly, I dont think that there is any reason for concern. My doctor actually told me not to alter my workout schedule when TTC or in the first trimester if i do get pregnant....

Re: ttc and exercise
JMO but if you are used to running 4-6 miles and it is not a push for you to do this than I think you're fine. I think pushing your body such as in marathon training to greater distance each week is not a good idea, but if you are comfortable running that far than keep it up.

Re: ttc and exercise
I would speak with your doctor about your body specifically. Was she very lean with little body fat due to avid exercise? A low body fat composition can impact fertility but we're talking in extreme cases.

Re: ttc and exercise
thanks for all your advice. my friend actually exercises a lot less than me and very low impact, so when she was told to do less i thought it was a little strange. i was actually going to run the 1/2 marathon, but since our conversation i have decided not to. i am very lean, but do get regular periods. i will stick to my regular workout, but will consult with my doctor. we actually have the same doctor so i wonder if the advice will be different.
thank you all though for your responses

Yes - perhaps he told her that based on her own medical history. I would definitely consult your Dr. and see what he says.

Re: ttc and exercise
I also posted this awhile ago; I too am a runner (did a marathon in Nov) and run up about 4 days a week plus other working out during the week. I've heard many tell me to cut back; most of the people who have told me that are not workout people. I've had other runners tell me that they conceived while running 50 miles per week, which is about double what I'm doing now. I can't imagine working out being harmful to chances of conceiving. My dr. told me that if the body fat got too low, such as how a body builder would be, that could interfere. I think we are fine, as long as we are getting AF. Best of luck to you....

thanks. i'm glad that you've heard that other runners have conceived. i didn't think it was a big deal as long as i didn't start something new like training for a marathon. we'll see what happens. been trying for 6 months and nothing yet.

Re: ttc and exercise
As long as we are on the topic.... I have a question... I usually exercise about three times a week doing various cardio machines at the gym. I just started ttc last month and I was nervous about working out after ovulating. I was worried that exercising might inhibit the egg implanting. Needless to say I didn't get pregnant last month anyway. But what are your thoughts?
Thanks! And sorry if I hijacked the thread.

I still do not believe that working out harms anything. I am around people who are workout maniacs and all of them have conceived while being on a workout program. Some have even told me that they ran a race not knowing they were pg & the baby was fine - and in a race your heart rate skyrockets, which is something they tell you not to let happen if you workout while pregnant. My suggestion would be not to try anything new. If you have been doing cardio machines and your body is used to them, you'll be fine. In fact, while you're ttc, I don't even know that it matters if you start something new - it's when you are pg that you should NOT begin a new type of workout. However, if you want to be cautious, just stick to your normal routine. Exercising if anything should help your body. I totally am with you, been ttc for 6 months, NOTHING!!

Same here - 6 months, NOTHING!! Running actually takes my mind off things. I figure if I keep planning races, getting pg will interfere (in a good way)....best of luck

Re: ttc and exercise
From everything i have read, excercise during pregnanct is good. They say if you were not doing a lot to get your heartrate going before pregnant (ie running on treadmill) don't do it while pregnant because your heart & the baby will not be able to tolerate it.
My SIL is pg with her second & was not into working out. She was going to start a routine in Jan but found out she was pg. The doctor told her "No Excercise on machines" bc her heart is not use to it & it could affect the baby....
I do the treadmill/elliptical machine every other day but do a 2 mile powerwalk everyday. I asked my doctor when we spoke about TTC & she said to maintain it until I can't do it anymore. It will help me to loose weight faster after the baby!
