TTC and tenure?

Just wondering. We wont be trying to concieve yet but I wouldn LIKE to try and get pregnant next summer. Next school yearwill be my tenure year and I was wondering if anyone took leave before tenure and what kind of response you got from coworkers and admins?

Thanks

Re: TTC and tenure?

I am already tenured, so I haven't dealt with this personally. But it can be tricky going out on leave before tenure. You might jeopardize being asked back, or being tenured. Has this happened in your building?

Re: TTC and tenure?

I am in the same situation. I have decided I am not putting my life on hold for my job!! The year I am preg. will be my tenure year. If they want to fire me for that well then they will have a whole lot more to deal with! I am not going to be backed into corners because of lack of tenure. I know a few teachers that got pregnant the first year of teaching and it worked out fine! If you are liked by the district then there should be no problems. I am tired of waiting for other things in my life that have to do with career. (school and work!) Best of luck!

I decided not to wait for tenure.

Having a family is more important to me than my job right now. I am almost 30 and didn't want to wait. In my district, they have been excessing tenured teachers and witheld tenure for others, so I decided not to put it off for another year, since who knows what they will decide to do with me anyway.

I believe everybody is entitled to FMLA. I knew a girl who had a baby Feb. of her tenure year and came back for the last 2 weeks of school. Her tenure was pushed back to Oct.

Re: TTC and tenure?

The thing is this is my fourth year teaching but only the second with my current district so I feel like I waited long enough for things do to my job (like getting married etc) and now that I am thinking about when I want to have a baby, I cant possibly imagine waiting a whole extra year just for tenure. I understand it may get pushd back XXXX amount of weeks I am out but ugh..I just can't deal with all the c*** that comes along with being a teacher.

I have a friend that got preggo the first year she was hired and she took an extra year off and they still had her job for her when she came back so I guess maybe it isnt as taboo as they make us think?

Re: TTC and tenure?

Like BobB'sWife, I am not putting my life on hold for my job anymore. I have 2 more years till tenure and I'm just not willing to wait that long (I'll be 30 in December).

I think the ideal is to time the baby so it comes at the end of the school year and then you have the summer off. OF COURSE, there is no guarantee such a plan will work! But that's what I'm aiming for right now. That way I'll take my 6 weeks and then go back in Septemeber. Legally, they have to give you the 6 weeks and then I believe FMLA kicks in if you so choose.

If my plan doesn't work - then I'll take a break and decide from there. I do NOT want to jeopardize my job, but the reality is that our future children are MUCH more important than the job.

As long as there are more that 50 employees you can get FMLA. I am not eligible for it at my job.

Re: TTC and tenure?

I was told it was illegal to deny tenure because of maternity leave. Since I am not teaching in a public school, I am not tenure tracked and therefore cannot be denied tenure. However, I have yet to see any teacher, in ten years, not be given back her position.

Yes it is as it is illegal to fire anyone because they are pregnant..it is discrimination BUT I am sure they could justify it in another way if they really didnt want to deal with you. You'd have yourself a good lawsuit if they just up laid you off for no reason other than the pregnancy.

If you are untenured, I think they can just not ask you back and not give a reason...is this true?

I'm sure anything is possible, but I can't see them doing that. I know it's a fear among young teachers, but I've never heard of it happening. Live your life the way you want to live it. At the end of the day, it's just a job.Chat Icon

Re: TTC and tenure?

I agree with the other posters. I am going into my second year teaching and am TTC. This is just too important to me to wait. In my building people have been denied tenure for ridiculous reasons, and untenured people who took maternity leave and came back had no problems- so I feel whatever will be will be. I hoping worst case is that I'll have to wait a few extra months for tenure.

Re: TTC and tenure?

I teach college and am not tenure track right now. I had a 2 month window to get pregnant and much to my joy and surprise, got pregnant our first month trying. I'm due to give birth on May 9th - the last day of classes. I'm banking on the baby coming late.

I'll have my summer off, then it's right back to work in september. I couldnt risk it - but I'm fortunate that college summers are a lot longer - and the work week is much shorter.

good luck whatever you decide!

Re: TTC and tenure?

I waited to announce my pregnancy until the week after my tenure was voted on- didn't want to complicate things. In the end, you will do what is best for your situation.

Another poster mentioned that everyone is entitled to 6 weeks plus 12 weeks FMLA- I don't believe that is true. In my school, nontenured teachers may take sick days up to 4 weeks ( 6 for c-section) after the birth if you have enough saved up, then 12 weeks unpaid with insurance under FMLA (same for tenured). However, id you would like to take additional time, like the rest of the school year, or time until the next semester, then the board decides- some people get approved, many do not (for untenured that is).

As a tenured teacher, I am taking my sick days, then 12 weeks FMLA, then two weeks (until the end of the first semester). I am scheduled to return the first day of the second semester, January 30. However, I am hoping and praying that I can take the entire year off- depends on our finances.

Good luck!

Actually I can take up to two years off unpaid in my current contract but I think that applies to tenured teachers...I have to look over my contract and see what it says for untenured.
