TTC without tenure? (long island districts)

We are not TTC now, but just in case my tenure from NYC does not carry over to Long Island- does anyone think that this might be jeopardize tenure?

My friend got a job on LI-- got PG about a month after she started---- and had to sweat out the summer not knowing if she had a position in Sept. Turns out she did- but wondering if most school districts are like this?

I don't understand this. Non-tenured teachers need to be asked back, and the district contract will say by which day - for us it's April 15th-ish. Untenured teachers would never go the whole summer without knowing whether or not they have a job.

If you are pregnant and untenured, worse case scenario - they push back your tenure period for the time that you were out (which is the situation I am in right now). If they had a problem with you that wasn't pregnancy related, you would know about it.

I don't think tenure from NYC ever carries over to LI. I could be wrong, but I don't think it works that way.

No, it doesn't carry over. If you receive tenure in the city and get a job in Long Island, you have to wait an additional two years to be qualified for tenure in a long island school.

Tenure does not carry from district to district. If you are tenured in one district, you have two years until tenure in the new district, instead of 3.

I would say it's discrimination if you lost your job due to having a baby. You would still get your FMLA but I guess tenure would be pushed back.

it will take you 2 years on LI after you have tenure somewhere else.

your friend's story doesn't make sense...you have to know by a certain date AND they can't not ask you back solely because you're pregnant!!!!! it is against the law!!!

Thanks for all your replies!

I know that tenure does not carry over- what i meant is- I may or may not have tenure in NYC (only going in for 1 day of my 4th year)

If I do have tenure- great- that means in 2 i will have tenure in LI (hopefully) we can ttc in 2 years

If I dont- then I have to wait 3 years here b4 I have tenure- and I am not sure if I want to wait that long to TTC.

Re: TTC without tenure? (long island districts)

I am untenured and had a baby in May. Every district is different, but my district isn't allowed to puch back tenure because of maternity leave.

I am sorry to sound silly, but I dont understand what you are saying...how would you *not* know if you have tenure? Were you granted tenure?

Are you moving to a LI district now?

I wanted to address your concern but was just a little confused...

Re: TTC without tenure? (long island districts)

you dont sound silly and I know I sound confusing.

I was recommended for tenure this past June- however- you don't officially receive tenure until you physically go in for one day of your fourth year.

I was offered and accepted a position in LI- over the summer. I have officially resigned from the NYCBOE- with Aug 31st (which would mean going in one day of my 4th year) as my last day of employment.

With that being said, I am unsure of my tenure status until next week. In the meantime I was just wondering about all this TTC stuff for someone who was not tenured.

ok, got it. I was trying to make sense of it. So if you go in the first day, yes, your tenure should be in effect. But you are saying you are not sure it will since you resigned?

As far as TTC, you should not let the untenured part worry you too much. I have seen teachers go out on leave. untenured. I have never seen a teacher get penalized for taking time while untenured. (That has just been my experience...)

I TTC'd and got PG before I had tenure. I was lucky and still got tenure but even if I didn't it would have been worth it to me!

really?? i thought it was law that they had to extend tenure by however many months/weeks you were out...whether for medical/maternity/etc. are you absolutely sure about that? i only question it because i've become pretty familiar with what districts are/are not allowed to do and i've never heard of them not pushing it back (for example instead of getting tenure your first day back in sept, you get it the first day in dec)

I bet they have it in their contract that they can't push it back. I really doubt it is law, but more a district rule.

Very tricky - well done btw!

You went in for one day so then technically you are tenured.
The DOE or your new job could be jerks about it, but if that is what your DOE contracts states, then you are good to go.

From what I am reading in my School Law book (I remember reading about this during the year b.c this was my tenure year also)

if you resign from a position before the effective date of tenure to accept another teaching position, the new district should recognize the tenure.

You need to enter the building in your fourth year to get tenure. I did not leave NYC until my fifth year teaching for that reason.

Re: TTC without tenure? (long island districts)

I was wondering the same thing. I am going to start TTC around my tenure which is in 1 1/2 years. I hope to get pregnant next spring/summer. That will mean I should get tenure in Jan of 09 and if all goes well then have a baby any time after that. I am going off the pill this Jan and moving into my parents house which I am buying so if it happens before then it happens before, I won't stop it...Chat Icon

Last year was my first year in my district. I had my son in May, and I am going back in Sept, no problems. My principal was amazing with it!
