Tutoring question..
Does anyone do this on the side? I am not a fulltime teacher right now (looking for a job)..and I don't know if posting flyers all over the place is going to get me children to tutor.
How did you start off?
Thx

Re: Tutoring question..
I used to tutor through a tutoring service....it is a good way to get started and then get jobs on your own through the inital clients.

Re: Tutoring question..
Has anyone worked for or heard of The Professional Tutors of America? It's a company that pays you 1/2 of what they charge (they charge bet. 40-55 dollars per hour) and send you to different people in your area (approx 15min/20 min away from your home). You can also make your hours and it's part time...
Sounds too good to be true!

Re: Tutoring question..
My sis is a Kindergardten(sp?) teacher and does tutor on the side. Most of the children are from the school and then she gets referrals. I know that she makes $400(cash) just doing that.

On the one hand, it's good that they get you clients, but on the other hand, half of $40 or $55 is not that great. I did a search the other night on this board because I was thinking about tutoring this summer, and many ladies get $50 an hour with no middle man. I think it's worth the extra legwork to get to pocket the whole amount.

Re: Tutoring question..
Just put the word out. Just by chance I got a tutoring gig, just by mentioning that i tutor, and I had $60 an hour in cash in my pocket. I used to tutor for a major test prep company. I didn't even make half that, while they made double....I had a lot more students that way though. Try to just mention it every chance you get and put the word out. I haven;t tried fliers or a classified ad, but it couldn't hurt.

this is my thought too. I used to work for a tutoring company, and while the pay was OK, I knew they were charging double or more than what I got. The perks were that I didn't have to go to the student's house and I got 3 or 4 hours of work at once.
But, I did have to sign something specifically saying I would not recruit students from their program for my own tutoring services, and I would have a problem violating that. Also, much like schools, there is a certain level of bureaucracy dealing with the company and I would rather just deal with a few individual parents directly.

What do you tutor? I can always give your name at my school as someone to call. I used to tutor a ton of kids, but since getting pregnant, I decided to stop. FM me if you'd like.

I did by word of mouth... I started with a kid of someone my mom works with and then went from there. I never posted anything... unfortuately all those kids are done now.. I like it, easy cash.

I work for a major test prep company and the advantage of working for them is you don't have to do your own advertising. You can get as many students as you like.
Plus you don't have to develop your own curriculum.
