Tutoring... What's the "going rate" in your area?
I just recently got a few requests for tutoring over the summer, and I'm not sure about the current "going rate".
How much do you charge per hour for tutoring AND in which subject do you tutor?
Last time I tutored was two years ago, and I charged kids in Garden City 40.00 per hour. I think that's cheap now, but who knows. I'm looking to be fair, not become a millionaire (although that would be NICE).

In my district I was charging $75 and I was told that's too little - that I should ask for at least $100.

Re: Tutoring... What's the "going rate" in your area?
my FI is a HS math teacher who charges $90 an hour but its a VERY affluent area - when he works in other areas he charges much less. The reason he charges $90 is because all of the other math teachers in his dept charge $95 and he was pretty much told to not go less or it would make everyone look bad. So, thats what he did. As a new teacher he didnt want to rub anyone the wrong way.

Re: Tutoring... What's the "going rate" in your area?
I am tutoring for a 7th grade student in math for $50/hr. I was told I can get a lot more. I started tutoring him two years ago and I am embarrassed to raise the rate.

Re: Tutoring... What's the "going rate" in your area?
Okay, so I came up with a number for one kid in particular. He comes from a tough home life - father died two years ago, mom works three jobs to make ends meet. I told his mom that I would tutor him for 2 hours, once a week, and charge her 40.00. This is GROSSLY under the amount that I would normally charge - 60.00 an hour - but the mom agreed to drop him off in my town library for weekly sessions.
The way I look at it is, I help out this student (I'm one of the only person he connects with at school) and keep him on track, and the weekly rate will cover my weekly cleaning sessions.
It's "found" money. Besides, I'd tutor this kid for free if they needed me to. He's great.
Thanks for your input!!!
