We went to Sleepy's clearance in Riverhead (as that's where we live) and the cheapest mattress, boxspring and frame was $300.
Mattress $160
Boxspring $80
Frame $60
We have not purchased yet, but when we do, we'll only need a mattress as we're getting a captain's bed for DS.
Good luck.
Not sure where you live, but check out Ikea, they have reasonably priced ones.

We spent around $600 on the mattress and boxspring.

We got ours at Costco (for DS) I think it was about 300. And its super comfy!!!!!
