TWO fare hikes for LIRR
We already had almost a 4% increase in March - now they want to raise fares by 8% next year and then another 5% in 2011??????
This year my ticket went to $278/mo. With a 8% increase it would be $300. ANOTHER 5% would be $315. Sorry MTA, but that is INSANE. I don't get 8% or even 5% raises at work. I can barely afford what I am paying now. If this happens I won't be able to commute to work anymore.

Re: TWO fare hikes for LIRR
Absolutely absurd!! If things keep up like this. LIPA increases, MTA increases, gas prices, housing prices, ridiculous taxes. No one will be able to afford on LI unless you are freakin Donald Trump

Re: TWO fare hikes for LIRR
it's insane.
They had their best on time record in decades and now they want more money? That's how it's supposed to be. You don't get extra money because you're on time. I don't!

Re: TWO fare hikes for LIRR
I think it's disgusting.
I took a late train home from work the other night that had 3 dead cars. The conductors refused to open them - meanwhile 3 off duty conductors had a nice ride home.
But by all means, let me hand over some more money.

Re: TWO fare hikes for LIRR
I dont know if anyone saw LIRRs little bulliten flyer last week (the one that gives the onetime performance and updates), but there was this cute "ditty" about the middle seat and how you cant say there are no seats when the middle seat is left empty. Listen if I have to be sandwiched in between two burly men reading the NY Times, I'd rather stand the whole friggin' way....IMO in that scenario there IS NO MIDDLE SEAT. Maybe add a few xtra effing cars and I'll pay extra. Sorry...I had to vent. I think the chick giving herself a manicure on the train this morning set me off

I hate it when I am on the inside of a three seater and someone sits in the middle and spreads out like they have all the room in the world - elbows out, newspaper, laptop, etc. I get squished against the window.

Totally agree!!! Middle seat my butt. And it's now standing room only on some trains. The Ronkonkoma branch is a joke. I'm considering moving to the south shore.
eta: it's so bad with people standing that they stand over so close..it's too packed. Sometimes the collectors don't get to the cars.
The LIRR is making money hand over fist.

Re: TWO fare hikes for LIRR
South shore trains are JUST as bad. I barely made the 613 to Long Beach the other night and had to stand the entire way to Jamaica because everyone crams into the first four cars. EVERY seat is filled...
My favorite os all of the problems... fire in the tunnel, smoke in the tunnel, signal problems, broken track, disabled train...etc. You are going to raise my rates for that

Re: TWO fare hikes for LIRR
A man with a rather large behind wanted the middle seat next to me this morning. Of course, I get up, he sits, and there's no room left for me
IMHO if you are small, petite, etc, attempt the middle seat. Otherwise, pretend it's not there

Re: TWO fare hikes for LIRR
My previous boss has a brother who has been a conductor on the LIRR for many years. According to him 'signal problems' is the cover up phrase for everything.

Re: TWO fare hikes for LIRR
It aggrivates me to no end that they have a $10b budget but when it comes to cutting back they chose to go after their customers rather than trim the fat within. I mean I'm not for layoffs but I think there are wasted opportunities to save money.
Not to mention that my commute is not worth what I pay...old cars, delays on a weekly basis (Long Beach is having problems today - three days in a row with advisories)...it drives me crazy.

Re: TWO fare hikes for LIRR
I had a brutal trip into the city today. Came in a little later. Tried to get on an 11:10 from Babylon but a train got cancelled.
Then as we were approaching Penn... the train stopped before getting into the station. We waited 15 minutes for some tracks to clear.
Then we finally start pulling in and I thought they were going to open the doors because the train stopped. Then the conductors get on the PA and say "please be patient we have to *reposition the train*". W/T/F?
LOL Apparently they overshot the platform so they have to back the train up. Duh! So another 15 mins later they finally start to back it up.
Right before they start to back it up though, the conductor gets on the PA all ****** off "Can you PLEASE STOP PUSHING THE BUTTON - WE WILL BE MOVING SHORTLY".
Hahahaha the passengers were so ****** they keep pushing the conductor signal button. Hahaha everytime the Conductor got on the PA all you heard was BEEEP-BEEEP-BEEEP in the background. Was so great.
ETA: And when they were "waiting for track space" I don't know what they were waiting for. When we got in all the platforms were empty.

Re: TWO fare hikes for LIRR
They made my train a 10 car train permanately now. It was a 12 car train. They say ridership is up so lets decrease the amount of cars. Classic LIRR.

Re: TWO fare hikes for LIRR
How about the other day when there was a broken rail in Amtrak's tunnels - so the LIRR customers get all our trains delayed for 1/2 an hour, Penn station fills up to the point of extreme fire hazard levels, and all the trains are packed beyond belief.. and it wasn't even an LIRR problem!
Don't get me started on those friggin seats on the newer trains... i have gotten so many bruises on my thighs from the seat arm that sticks out at an odd angle and always manages to jam me in the leg when i scoot in.. not to mention, the other day i'm walking down the car and it caught my skirt and almost ripped it off me. that would've been a lovely sight i'm sure!
And don't forget the ever popular "conductor to channel 4" over the PA. DH and i always joke that thats the catch all phrase for any problem that comes up with them. Oh, there's a signal problem, 'conductor to channel 4'.. whats that? a fire in the tunnel? 'conductor to channel 4'

Re: TWO fare hikes for LIRR
I look at the LIRR as a necessary evil in my life. Kind of like working As annoying as the railroad can be, I still prefer it to the subway which is also has a proposed fare increase fo 12% because the metro card machines can only dispense quarters.

The broken rail was in an east side tunnel - that's where all the LIRR trains go. How could there not be delays?
But this I don't understand...every evening in Penn the doors close at the scheduled departure time then sits there to "wait for a train to cross in front of us". If this is ALWAYS the case, why not make my train one or two minutes later?
I actually have more problems with obnoxious riders then the LIRR itself. They are what makes commuting more miserable then it needs to be.

Yeah this wasn't fun. Trains were cancelled and the trains that did run were way overcrowded as well as Penn Station. I didn't understand why a problem in an Amtrak tunnel would cause LIRR issues either.
I also wish they would explain things better- delays and the such.
The newer trains might have issues with the armrests, but there is nothing bettter than sitting in an old train which smells like $hit and the seats have no padding left in them, so not only are they horribly uncomfortable, but you slide right out of them.

Very true.. Nothing like getting on the train in the morning to the smell of stale urine. But at least those seats felt like they had more room. But the old trains usually had more issues with breaking down and no ac, so i def. like the newer trains better.
I agree, if they would only explain things a bit more, people might not be so quick to get mad. They originally said 'due to a broken Amtrak rail, the LIRR is experiencing delays'. if they had said, due to a broken rail in our tunnels, we're experiencing delays' then it might've made more sense. Amtrak doesn't always use our tunnels - they do have their own as well. I would assume that the delays on the LIRR were caused by the fact that we had to share the tracks with Amtrak trains as well.
and yes, i agree with a previous poster as well that the people on the trains are just as much a treat as the trains themselves. At least it keeps us entertained!

they say this when we are ready to de-train. Yeah, I'll remember that when I'm at my desk.
