Tying Tubes VS Vasectomy
DH and I are trying to decide between the two. He feels that since I have to have a C-Section anyway I should just get my tubes tied anyway....because he is afraid to have a Vasectomy. We both agree that we don't want anymore children...but I think he should be the one to get fixed...because if for some reason we do change our minds its much easier for him to reverse his Vasectomy than it is for me to reverse a tubulation.
What do you think?
ETA: we both agree that one of us should have a procedure to prevent future pregnancies...because we both feel that it is unhealthy for me to remain on some sort of harmone to prevent pregnancy for the next possible 25 or more yrs.

Re: Tying Tubes VS Vasectomy
How old are you? That would be my first concern. I would NEVER tie my tubes before 40 or so. I would get norplant or use the rythym (natural family planning) method. JMO but my SIL got teh same argument from her DH and Dr and now regrets this decision. Her AF is all messed up too and her gyn told her that is a common complaint-she can get it every 2 weeks.

Re: Tying Tubes VS Vasectomy
I am on baby #3 and DH and I were pretty sure that after Jeremy we didn't want any more kids although we really didn't do much to prevent this one. I am 28 years old and the idea of being "fixed" when it is completly irreversable does not sit well with me. If one of us is getting sterilized it will be DH (even if the doc will have me open for a C/S)

Re: Tying Tubes VS Vasectomy
my cousin developed a blockage in her intestines and had to have major surgery - the gastro says it could be from scar tissue from having her tubes tied
Doesn't happen to everyone but
Just from a medical standpoint, If there was another way, I would avoid any reason to develope any more scar tissue, and probably ask my dh to get a vasectomy

I'm 29, DH is almost 32.
I didn't know that AF could visit more often....forget it. I think every 28 days is too often already.

Thanks for bringing up this point...the complications from a tubulation seem more serious than those from a vasectomy

You are right. I just read this article from the linkbelow:

Re: Tying Tubes VS Vasectomy
My DH and I have already decided that he will get a vasectomy when we are done with kids. It's less invasive, and the recovery is faster. (Though if I were to have a c/s for the next baby we hope to have, I don't know what the recovery would be like from having the tubal and the c/s simultaneously.)

Re: Tying Tubes VS Vasectomy
We are in the process of having this conversation now too. We were using FAM (charting) and the rythm method and you know what, I am PG with baby #2 6 months after having DD, totally not planned and obviously this didn't work for us.
DH refuses condoms, and i refuse BCP pills or any type of hormone birth control.
That mostly leaves surgery's, and DH was dead set against cutting his boys but until he researched some articles about tubal ligation, he agrees that viscetomy's are way less invasive and an outpatient 2 hour procedure where tubals are major surgery.
We will have to see when the time comes.
WE DO not want anymore than 2 kids!

Re: Tying Tubes VS Vasectomy
NEVER say never!!! After I had #3 I said "no more" and was adamant about it for the 1st year, but now, 15 mnths later, we are actually looking forward to 1 more. Unless there are absolutely clear reasons why you should not have any more children (health concerns for you or baby), I would not do anything that is permenant, how about an IUD, or other forms of BC.

Re: Tying Tubes VS Vasectomy
My cousin and her husband had three kids within 2 1/2 years (one was a set of twins)
Originally she was going to get her tubes tied when she was in for the csection but she did alot of research and they chose for him to get a vasectomy instead.
I actually babysat the kids while they had it done - they were home within three hours - and he said it wasn't bad at all.

Re: Tying Tubes VS Vasectomy
He should get the vasectomy. It's reversible, has no side effects and unlike tube tying, I've never heard of it growing back...I babysat for a woman who had 3 kids during the time I watched her kids. Baby #3 came 2 years after she had her tubes tied. Consequently, she had a 4th baby a few years later. She had 2 babies by accident after having her tubes tied TWICE.
I already told my DH that after we're done, he's getting a snip-snip. He disagrees, I told him there is no way I'm going on hormones after what happened to my mother so it's that or lots of kids.

Re: Tying Tubes VS Vasectomy
Vasectomies are a lot easier.
Considering I went through infertility testing and treaments that resulted in IVF, I feel like a car that's been hoisted up on the lift one too many times. I've had at least 8 doctors down there, had air blown through my tubes, 2 IUI's, dozens of injections which I gave myself, oral drug therapy, you name it!!
At one point I was tempted to buy underwear that said... "Men at Work" on them
I've had enough "Overhauling" to that area, DH and I agreed it's his turn.
No hormones for me. I'm over 35 and my Dad had a stroke at 57... NO WAY!!!!
