UGH. I hate to ask this, but in light of today's events....what is your disaster plan for getting to your kids or getting to safety??
I am interested both in the working parents perspective AND if you are home as the sole caregiver.
I was totally prepared to run across the Brooklyn Bridge and the 3 miles to my house, but I would have been totally useless if I actually made it.
I need a plan of action and a rendevous point for my family.
I am downtown. my husband is midtown, and our heart is in Brooklyn.

DH works in Queens or Manhattan (depending on the day), I'm in Great Neck, and we live in Commack. DS goes to daycare near where we live.
If something were to happen, DH would be stuck at work (He's NYPD) and I'd have to find my way home. My guess is daycare would stay open until I can get there to pick DS up. We would just wait at home until DH makes it - whenever that would be!

My family has a very thought out, elaborate emergency plan (its the nature of my job).
Today was a test drill. All of our plans were implemented very well.
We aced the test! I am very proud.

Well, it depends on the level of the emergency. We have our worst case scenario grand plan, but lower level threats, not much of a plan. The toughest part would be getting home (out of the city). I don't know that we can really plan that part.

Luckily I live under 4 miles from daycare, my house, parents house and Dh job. Whoever would be scheduled to pick up DS1 from daycare would still pick up. And we would meet at our house.
And now it confirms for me another reason why we should keep the land line as much as we considered getting rid of it recently. I couldn't get through to my sister cell today. she works at Penn plaza. I was starting to freak out. I called her job line and got through right away. And my brother in Boston either. But spoke to his roommate who he also works with and all is okay.

This is something I really need to think about.
I also need to make an emergency kit with water, batteries, food etc.
DH is a union electrician- so he can be anywhere on long island. I bring DD to work with me.
I would either stay at the office or make my way home with DD (3 miles away) and wait for DH there.

We don't have a plan.
We talked about it a few weeks ago when I saw an article in Parenting magazine.
We will def be working on something today.
After all was said and done I just was overcome by emotions thinking "what if". What if this was so much worst. I was in the living room and it didn't even occur to me that this was an earthquake. My baby was in the room sleeping. DH at work. I don't even think I know what to do in a earthquake.

it's not so much the earthquake that scared me as the aftermath. we are right on the water. we can just as easily be struck by a tsunami.
I don't think I could wait for dh....my instinct tells me that I should not have him come down into the city but that he should head inland...and that I should get my son since I am closet and make my way there.
he was joking about getting me a Vespa. it would certainly make getting out of town much easier.
I just really think that the Earth is changing. our weather has become more extreme...tornados in Brooklyn, far more frequent violent hail and thunderstorms, and now this.
I am not a doomsday person. I don't believe in 2012. but I do think the Earth changes every now and again. some parts wake up while others go to sleep. I think the Atlantic/East Coast is waking up. I just want to be prepared.

Re: UGH. I hate to ask this, but in light of today's events....what is your disaster plan for getting to your kids or getting to safety??
DH and I have a meet up point in case of emergency (we work a few blocks away from each other in Manhattan). But today made me realize that I don't know how I would get home to DD if God forbid there was a major emergency. We're in Brooklyn, but way into Brooklyn, so going over the bridge will only get us so far. We will definitely have to come up with some kind of plan just in case.

Re: UGH. I hate to ask this, but in light of today's events....what is your disaster plan for getting to your kids or getting to safety??
We have no plan. I think I may start making an emergency kit and start stocking up on emergency food items. Just in case!
Might be a stupid question, but what exactly is the right way to handle a earthquake. For a hurricane, you go down to the basement. Tornado, you would also go down to basement, or if you don't have a basement a room without windows like bathroom. I know I have heard of alot of people getting into bathtub. But what do you do with a Earthquake? I'm thinking go outside.

Re: UGH. I hate to ask this, but in light of today's events....what is your disaster plan for getting to your kids or getting to safety??
We are inland, and our rendevous point is the house, the alternate is the closest fire department. We have an emergency kit, both in the car, and a larger one in the house. We keep a reserve of gasoline, in a container in the garage, just in case, and the kids safety takes priority over our own at all points. If we leave the house to go to the FD I have a window paint pen and will write a word on the door, it's our safety word. If he ever calls and I say the word he knows to contact the authorities or that there is an emergency. Also we have a plan of if anyone is hurt we go to one hospital and stay there, and wait for the other to arrive.

I agree with you. Weather has changed dramatically in recent years. I think it would be foolish to think we are immune. That plus the possibility of any sort of terrorist attack, virus, bio warfare, etc. Too many scary possibilities. I don't believe in a 2012 type thing either, but I do believe in natural disasters, and unfortunately, terrorism.
As for a plan, I really just think that everyone in my family would go to my children to see who could get there fastest. Once we had them, probably wait at my house for everyone unless we had to get them out of there for safety reasons, and then we just hope we can be in touch via phone. scary

Maybe go outside, but if you don't have a safe path outside I know you are supposed to stand under a doorway frame...dnot know why or how I even know that....

Re: UGH. I hate to ask this, but in light of today's events....what is your disaster plan for getting to your kids or getting to safety??
Okay the door way thing....from earthquakes.us.gov. In past earthquakes in unreinforced masonry structures and adobe homes, the door frame may have been the only thing left standing in the aftermath of an earthquake. Hence, it was thought that safety could be found by standing in doorways. In modern homes doorways are no stronger than any other parts of the house and usually have doors that will swing and can injure you. YOU ARE SAFER PRACTICING THE “DROP, COVER, AND HOLD” maneuver under a sturdy piece of furniture like a strong desk or table. If indoors, stay there. Drop to the floor, make yourself small and get under a desk or table or stand in a corner. If outdoors, get into an open area away from trees, buildings, walls and power lines. If in a high-rise building, stay away from windows and outside walls, stay out of elevators, and get under a table. If driving, pull over to the side of the road and stop. Avoid overpasses and power lines. Stay inside your car until the shaking is over. If in a crowded public place, do not rush for the doors. Crouch and cover your head and neck with your hands and arms. You should practice the “DROP, COVER AND HOLD” method at work and at home at least twice a year.

This is SUCH good information/advice. We have NO emergency plan whatsoever, I am way too nonchalant about those types of things. But now with two kids and so much craziness going on in the world, I know we NEED to make a plan like yours.

DH is much closer to the baby (who stays with my Mom) than I am. Plus I would be mandated to stay at work in an emergency so, guess we'll have to have him be the one who gets to the baby ASAP. All I can hope for is to get word that everyone is safe!! Took a while today due to the jammed cell service.

DH has a plan to get himself and his sister out of the city in case of a major event. DH has some training in these situations so he developed a plan as soon as he started working in NYC.

I am very lucky that my DD goes to Daycare up the road (3 minutes...I timed it) from my job and my job is 15 minutes away from my house. So basically I can run up to daycare and get her. G-d forbid something happened, I have quick access to DD. My husband works 1 hour away, so we would just have to wait for him at home.

DH works across the street from daycare so as long as he is at work, he will go straight there. If there was something extreme and we couldn't use cars, he would walk up the 135 and I would walk down it (if we were both working). If one of us were home, that person would stay put and the other would make their way there (although it could potentially take a while as we live about 40 or so miles from work).
