UGH!! Need to replace my central air - Not too happy
Well the last few days it has been scorching outside about 95 and inside close to 90. I live in FL so this is not a good time for this to be happening. So we call someone to come to see what the issue is and come to find out our AC unit is too small for our house. I was like "What". They said whoever built the house put the wrong size AC unit in you have a unit for a 800 sq ft home when your house is actually 1200 sq ft and the unit is working overtime to try and cool your big house and is giving up doing the job. Who in there right mind doesn't measure or see what size the house is before installing something like that. The house was built in 2000 and we purchased it in 2005. UGH!!
DH and I are ****** and are wondering if the other houses in our community of 75 houses that were all built the same time have the wrong AC size in. So tomorrow morning we are getting a brand spanking new central air system that fits the house and I will have relief by tomorrow night. But I am just ****** at the builder and I know there is nothing I can do 8 years later.

That stinks!
We have one unit and we are "testing" it this summer to see if we need an additional pocket unit for the second floor. We think we will need one because the previous owners had a second in the attic.
At least you'll have cool air -- and right in time!

I would get another opinion. This doesn't sound right.

Actually, it sounds pretty common. Smaller units are of course cheaper in the short term. Whomever had it installed wanted to skimp on the unit, and get the cheapest one they could get away with. Apparently, it worked well enough for them, and to get the house sold, and a few years after. Unfortunately, now you're stuck with their "cost saving measure"....

We did get 2 opinions and they both said the unit is too small for the house. Then we had to shop around to get a unit that is worth the investment. We were going to replace it in the next year or so anyway to get a more efficient one but we didn't think this soon.

Even though we are not the original owners I think i am starting to see that with this house. The builders skimped on our back porch door also we had to replace because they put it in crooked and the wood rotted. The door started sticking, water leaking in and then not closing because of swelling. We are just thinking about when we sell in the next 5 years. We don't want the new owners going through all this and enjoy thier house. So we are glad we are finding out things now and not later. Plus we were told being efficient adds to value of the house. So we are happy in that sense.

We've also found out over the years that the guy who owned our house also cut costs wherever possible. I happened to work with someone who used to rent my house before I bought it. He filled me in on some details....
Luckily, none of them are too major, and we'll be fixing most of them soon. I'm looking forward to having some 90 degree corners in at least part of my house....

ok, good. You just need to be careful with contractors and various service providers. They will tell you anything to make money. It appears you have done your homework.
