Ugh. Why is everyone so JEALOUS?
I have a very good friend who walks in the VS fashion show every year. She is pretty much retired from modeling except for this show.
THREE of my friends and my SIL have all texted me saying that she is getting OLD looking she is getting.
Errr, friends, she is the same age as us and SIL, she is YOUNGER than you!
Why can't anyone be happy for anyone else anymore?

i am comfortable enough with myself to say when another woman is pretty - i don't need to put down a person who is better looking than i am or in better shape than i am!

Unfortunately it is human nature for people to behave this way
Personally I am so sick of "friends" or friends of friends that "act" happy for you then trash you.
sooo.... I shall be happy for your friend any one who is retired or not that can be part of VS show must be gorgeous

Not that I say it's ok, but I think it's more relief than jealousy.
Women get very threatened by beautiful women (and kudos to you for being so supportive and loving and seeing her past her looks!!!) so when they see a perfect woman start looking less than perfect, they think "Oh, look - FINALLY a wrinkle, baby fat, etc " It comes out as nasty, but the core of it is always poor self esteem....

It always boils down to poor self esteem - which manifests itself, in many, by bringing others down. It's more of a reflection on the person themselves, than the one they are directing their comments too.

I cannot stand jealousy. And it's not just about beauty of other people. It goes with someone else DH, their house, their car, anything really, etc...
It's about your own insecurities.
There is nothing wrong with wanting more for yourself (the same big house your friend has) and working towards goals to achieve them.
But jealousy is unhealthy in it's itself. It consums you and makes you unhappy.

I agree - women tend to put other women down if they think they are more beautiful, more successful, more whatever than they are. I noticed this in the workplace too. Men will help men get ahead, but women will more often than not help another woman get ahead. I actually heard that on the radio also.

I LOVE the VS fashion show and I watch it every year! It was GREAT this year. All of the women are so beautiful.
My favs are Heidi, Adriana, Alessandra, Marissa and the adorable Australian girl. Not sure of her name though.

As everyone else said, I think it is insecurity and self esteem issues. Many people of tendencies/thoughts along this path so it is not surprising. What is surprising is that they would think it is okay to say ugly things about your friend to you. Yuck.

All the VS models are stunning!!! (we need a drooling smiley!)
But I must admit, I was somewhat relieved when I saw some cellulite on the back of Heidi Klum's thighs.  It somewhat "humanized" her for me, especially considering how awesome her bod looks after 3 kids.
ETA: Heidi Klum isn't a friend...so my post is irrelevant.
