UGHHH - What did we do wrong Stain Peeling off Deck

I cant believe it - I just went outside and the stain that we put on our deck on Monday is now peeling off! We used Behr Premium which has a 24 hour dry time. It felt dry yesterday morning. Now there are big sections that are just bubbling and peeling. DH is going to flip when he sees this. He spent all morning Sunday cleaning/prepping and 1/2 the day Monday staining. Chat Icon

I don't know how we are going to fix this. Any suggestions?

Hmmmnn..that sux bc it sounds like he did a lot of prior work. I would go to a local hardware store like an Ace and ask. HD or Lowes, it's hit or miss if they know what they are talking about. I hope it's easily remedied. Could it have been too warm or humid when he did it?

I don't have any suggestions to fix, but I was curious to why it peeled when stain is supposed to penetrate so I did a quick search and it seems that BEHR stain products tend to do this...at least that is what other forums said Chat Icon

not helpful, I know...

the only thing i can think of was that the deck was not completely dry before the stain was applied or perhaps it malfunctions under direct sunlight or extreme heat?

so sorry its happening!

the wood might not have been totally dry. I believe you have to have it sit in direct sunlight for 1 week with no rain or moisture before staining. if that's not it, it did rain yesterday. if it wasn't totally dry the rain may have interfered.

either way I'm sorry Chat Icon

Wood might not have been dry. Also did he use a roller or brush? Roller tends to peel off faster due to the way it's applied, vs brush application absorbs better into the grain of the wood (from what I have read). Also...some products have a rep for being not so good...

Re: UGHHH - What did we do wrong Stain Peeling off Deck

I am pretty sure that when we did our deck last year we had to wait a few days between cleaning it and staining. If he cleaned the deck on Sunday and stained on Monday, there is no way it was dry and the stain probably did not absorb properly. Sorry!
