Ultrascreen/AFP question

I am very confused.

I opted to not have the ultrascreen done for several reasons.

I do research on line (here and other sites) and I feel like I am missing something.

Is the AFP a blood test without the sonogram? Does it test for DS?

No matter where I look I get different test names and answers.

I really do feel stupid that I can't understand the differences between the tests. And normally, I am pretty smart! Chat Icon

Re: Ultrascreen/AFP question

Yes, the AFP is only a bloodtest, no sono. The AFP portion checks for spina bifida and nuerual tube deficency. The AFP/Quad Triple Screen includes a screening for Downs as well.

Re: Ultrascreen/AFP question

So, even though I passed on the ultrascreen, I could opt for the AFP/Triple to see about DS? When do most doctor's offer this?

TIA

Re: Ultrascreen/AFP question

oops, I misread your post.

Yes, you can do the AFP/Quad Triple Screen. I believe it's the Quad Triple Screen portion that screens for Downs, and not every Dr. orders that. Some just do the AFP portion. So I would ask if that's what you want to have done.

AFP is usually done between 16-18 weeks

Re: Ultrascreen/AFP question

An Ultrascreen is used to detect Chromosomal Anomalies such as Down Syndrome. It involves a sonogram that measures the fat pad at the back of the babies neck. (Nuchal Translucency). A larger than normal NT can be indicative of such disorders. It also involves a blood test that tests for PAPP-A & HcG...The NT number is then entered into a computer with your age and the results of your blood work. It then comes up with your risk for having a child with a Chromosomal Anomaly.

The Quad screen tests AFP, BetaHcG, Estriol, and Hormone Inhibin A. It is designed to screen for both neural tube defects and Chromosomal Anomalies.

The original triple screen or AFP was just designed to screen for Neural Tube defects the fact that low levels were indicative of disorders such as Down Syndrome was kind of a bonus...but the test werent fine tuned to screen for DS so they dont really use the triple screen alone any more but doctors choose to do the Quad instead...

Re: Ultrascreen/AFP question

The ultrascreen is done at 12 weeks. I really enjoyed the ultrascreen ultrasound. We got to see a baby that looked like a real baby. They gave a quick finger prick blood test afterwards. I would recommend getting the ultrascreen, even if just to see your baby! It's really painless.

AFP is done at 16 weeks.

Re: Ultrascreen/AFP question

If you waived the ultrascreen you can certainly get the AFP done still. Doctors often combine them to get the greatest percentage of accuracy but doing just one is fine too.

Some docs just test the AFP- this tests for spina bifida and neural tube defects but not DS.

The quad screen tests for DS among other things including AFP.

The triple screen tests for what the quad does but doesn't include AFP.

If you want the full picture ask for the quad screen. Different drs call it different things which is so frustrating! But explain what disorders you would like to be screened for and they'll point you in the right direction.
