Ultrascreen question....I hope it makes sense
I'm almost 12 weeks and I went for my ultrascreen (I think thats what it was called) with Dr. Kofinas. They did a sono and measured the back of the baby's neck and checked the fluid first...they said everything looked great. Then they took blood right after the sono but I have to wait for the results of the bloodwork. My question is since the sono part looked really good.....does it make it more likely that the blood part of the test will look good too? In other words since the sono is good....does that make the chances of finding downs or other issues with the blood test less likely? hope that makes sense. I'm just so nervous about it all. TIA

It should be fine. If the measurements were off then they might send you for more testing.

I think sono checks for certain defects. The blood will tell you your % risk of Downs syndrome and some other genetic abnormalities. Dont sweat it...im sure you'll be fine!!

yes, it makes sense. it works the opposite way too - let's say the blood results came back with an elevated trisomy 21 result. they would look at your sono results (which are good) and then probably conclude that the blood test was wrong. remember - it's a screening test. not a diagnostic test!
also if there was any question they would probably recommend you have the AFP at 16 weeks before ven suggesting you have an amnio.
but it's my understanding that if there was downs, or a trisomy issue, that there would be physical markers. i could be wrong though. i never went to medical school

Re: Ultrascreen question....I hope it makes sense
i am pretty sure that the sono part is a very good indicator itself if it came back good.. i think once they get the bloodwork they just put it together and come up with a ratio .. i

I agree with LB.
My sono looked perfect and the blood results ended up perfect.

I am sure it's fine. When I had my DD the sono went great and there was nothing to report when the blood work came back. Don't worry!!......I'm sure the baby is just perfect!!

Re: Ultrascreen question....I hope it makes sense
If they didn't see any "markers" on your sono... i.e. extra fluid behind the neck everything should be fine Your bloodwork will also give you a ratio.
Of course you're worried... you're already a Mom. It's hard not to be nervous, but all sounds good.
