I have to say I respectfully disagree with this. The hotel has a duty to make the parking garage safe. I don't know the details - but I think there is a big difference between being pulled into an alley in a public area and being raped and being attacked and raped in a private garage. They have a duty to try to keep you safe. I would think they would need to have adequate lighting, video cameras, security to do their best to ensure that things like that don't happen. They can't protect everyone (say you are raped by another guest) but it should hopefully keep those who are looking for trouble out of their private garage.

Disgusting comments and defense...that poor woman and kids

No one but YOURSELF is responsible for your safety..yes you can sue, it's one of our many freedoms...but she'll have a hard time proving the hotel was responsible. I'm sure they'll just settle for some quiet money out of court.

Stamford is a busy, urban city, and living in CT i'm VERY familiar with it..it's so awful she was attacked in the parking lot, but like people said We don't know all the circumstances of the case from either side.

What's weird is I live in CT and haven't heard 1 blip about this on our news.

As usual i guess I am in the minority here....

I agree that the hotel [lawyers] are dirtbags for even infering that she is responsible for being raped, or didn't protect herself enough (while she was trying to protect her children) I think that she was angry and hurt, but I don't think she should have tried to sue the hotel. The hotel did not rape her, the scubag priiick did!

I agree. How they should have responded was that they are appauled by what happened to her and are now keeping a security guard the the garage. It could have happened to one of their employees. Parking garages can be very dangerous.

Re: Unbelieveable...

I'm curious to those who feel that the hotel isn't responsible in a small percentage of a way (NOT saying they are just playing a bit of devils advocate).

What if this women was raped in one of their hotel rooms (assuming she didn't leave her door unlocked) - but what if someone broke into her room and raped her. Would the hotel have a portion of liability in that aspect. Or as an above poster wrote you are only responsible for yourself? Do they owe you a duty to have security in the hotel and cameras, adequate lighting etc.

Now how is that different from an open parking lot that just anyone can walk into - versus what should be a private hotel parking garage that presumably one should be in only if they are patronizing the hotel for lodging or meals. I would think if it is a know area that has crime (any cite really fits that) they should be aware that they need to have adequate lighting, security patrolling the garage and cameras (assuming that they didn't in this case).
