underactive thyroid and PCOS
Hi Ladies, My dr released me to an RE and at my consult apt he had some bloodwork done. It turns out that my PCOS may be related to hypothyroidism. I am shocked no one picked this up before. Does anyone have any experience with this? He put me on synthroid and we will try clomid at a higher dosage (I never ovulated on clomid before) and see if I ovulate. I have to try provera again first (I only got my af twice in six cycles of provera and clomid). Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this...
Thanks

I'm not sure, except that it's good they know why you have PCOS. With the constant monitoring you will receive at the RE, you should get some better answers.

Re: underactive thyroid and PCOS
I was diagnosed in the reverse order. I was first told I suffered from Hypothyroidism and shortly there after PCOS.
Make sure your TSH levels are between .5-2.5. When I was first diagnosed, it was 6.67 and within a month it went down to 1.17. It is lower now but I dont remember the numbers. My hypothyroidism is auto-immune to Hashimotos disease.
Glad to hear that you are finally getting some answers.

Re: underactive thyroid and PCOS
Hi, I too have a hypothyroid, and was told I have PCOS afterwards. I was never told the 2 were related. I never ovulate on my own. I haven't started clomid yet, but I do take provera to bring on AF. When I was first diagnosed, my TSH was 150 The dr. couldn't believe it. Now I'm on levoxyl, and my TSH was at 1.7 last time we checked. So it's now under control, but it's not helping me ovulate. You and I sound a lot alike. Do you ever get AF on your own? Have you always been like this? I used to get it on my own ever other month, every 3 months, but now nothing. So, I'm going to start clomid probobly in the summer.

Re: underactive thyroid and PCOS
I never knew there might be a correlation. I have hypothyroid...but not PCOS.

Not everyone who suffers from hypothyroidism suffers from PCOS. The thyroid does affects so many body functions.

Re: underactive thyroid and PCOS
Thanks for the replies. It seems like the doctors (and us) have so much to learn about how all of this is related. I have been on sythroid for about a week, and am almost finished with Provera. Hopefully I will get af.... it has beeb since August. I only got it three time with Provera... I just want to get it so I can start another cycle of clomid. I am about "clomided out." Hopefully we will be onto bigger and stronger things soon. Thanks again, girls!
