Unemployment question
I recently was told my hrs will be cut to 20 hrs per week (4 hrs a day for 5 days) from 40.
Does anyone know if I will be eligible for UE? I'm trying to seach on the website and if I'm reading it correctly, it says "if you work 4 days a week and earn less than $405" you will be eligible.
I'm concerned that since I will be working 5 days I will not qualify.
Does anyone have any experience with this?
I can't find a phone # on the website to speak with a rep. Everything is automated, to either apply or have questions for a current claim.
TIA.

Re: Unemployment question
I believe so - because the drastically cut your weekly hours which I am assuming is your livelihood!!
You tried these #s?
518-457-9000 1-888-4-NYSDOL
I believe once you file they will sched. an appt. with you and determine your case.
I really think you should be able to get something. I could be wrong.

Re: Unemployment question
I didn't see those numbers listed on the site.
I will call and see if I can get an answer.
Thank you for the reply!
UPDATE: I called the 518# and it's confirmed. If you work 4 or more days you are not eligible I don't under stand this. I can work 3/ 8 hr days and be eligible but I can't work 5/ 4 hr days, which equals less hrs. Because UE goes by days and not hrs. That's just not right.
When I said "that really stinks" the operator agreed with me.

Re: Unemployment question
Sissy, can you ask your boss if you could switch the days you work?
maybe work 3 days instead and work more hours?
Could you tell your boss what you found out?
I think that's so wrong. It makes no sense.
If he just laid you off would you get more from UE? I'm not asking you to tell me your salary, just a thought.
It almost seems that it's fruitless. You are working half the hours and getting half the pay and can't collect.
eta: this is really not kosher, but you "could" say you work 3 days. Maybe your boss would back you up when he is contacted? I know, it's not really honest, but it's a messed up system and you need help.

The job I do, needs to be done daily. It's billing, shipping and receiving. Along with collections.
It makes NO SENSE. And I actually called them again to make sure I understood it correctly. Unfortunately I did. The girl even agreed with me.
I spoke to my manager and told her what I found out. I thought about asking if I could split the 20 hrs over 3 days, for "paperwork purposes" but I really don't think she will do it. At no point did she seem to want to work something out. And I don't know how comfortable I would feel asking her.
The only concern I have about being laid off completely is the medical. Right now, they are allowing me to keep my medical with 20 hrs of work.

Re: Unemployment question
Hmm that seems so unfair to you! Sorry. I work in NJ and I *think* that particular rule is diff. here. I think you should start looking...it's not at all fair to you to just chop your hours like that

I know, it's not really honest, but it's a messed up system and you need help. They would have to doctor up payroll to reflect only 3 days pay. I went through this too when I was laid off. I got a part-time job to supplement the crappy UE pay and when I worked one extra day during the holiday week I got no benefit that week and got questioned every subsequent week.

I agree it doesn't sound good that they cut you big time like that. Is there a way to look for something else while working there? I also think NY should change that rule. It is ridiculous especially now when everyone si suffering. Good luck and keep us updated.

is there someone else that can help you at work? That just seems so cruel. We're cutting your hours and too bad we won't help you get UE...really..they have to understand. Most of us can't make it on half of our pay.
I get what you said about the medical. I know you're scared to make waves.
