Unfriendly dog at the Street Fair
It's about a dog, but it's really more about the owner than the dog...
We were at the Ronkonkoma annual Street Fair. About half a mile of vendors, and several thousand people.
We came across a small dog and its owner. DD started to approach it, and it barked and backed away.
The owner said "Yeah, she's not friendly around people she doesn't know."
So, you thought it would be a great idea to bring her to a street fair with thousands of people?!?!?!....
There were quite a few dogs there, and I think it's great, as long as the dogs are very sociable, and are OK in large crowds. Don't bring a dog that doesn't like crowds into a huge crowd.....

That's really terrible...why bring your dog out to a crowded place then? Some dog owners are so dumb!

I HATE dog owners like that! Whenever I bring Norway anywhere I always meet at least one who says their dog is aggressive toward other dogs

Re: Unfriendly dog at the Street Fair
I don't agree with bringing dogs to something like this, my allergies are so bad that I was very close to an allergy attack but the majority were well behaved so I have nothing to complain about.
But, I did meet a few unfriendly dogs at the fair today, poor DD was scared more than once. It wasn't really the dogs fault, more along the lines of owners not paying attention to what their dog was doing. Plus I saw a few owners that needed some lessons on taking a dog out in public (a dog threw-up in the middle of the road and an owner just left it).

Re: Unfriendly dog at the Street Fair
Just a general thing with dogs & the public:
i think the most important thing is to remind people, especially kids, is to ask the owner first if the dog is friendly before approaching and if it's OK to pet the dog...the safest way to deal with any dog, especially if the owner isn't that responsible.

I agree with this--but if your dog is aggressive, don't bring it to a place where there are going to be people on all sides of you in crowded quarters--such as a street fair. That is just irresponsible.

I agree with both of you - there is a responsibility on both sides. Parents should keep in mind that most dogs only tolerate being hugged and are made uncomfortable by it. It's never a good idea to allow a child to run straight at the business end of a dog, regardless of breed or even if they know them.
And dog owners should keep in mind that large gatherings of people or dogs - parades, fairs, dog parks, etc. - are not the place to "socialize" your unfriendly dog. That's not socializing. That's putting an already unbalanced, stressed dog into an even worse situation and is just plain irresponsible.
Especially in the case of the dog owners, I have no problem saying this to them because they're putting everyone at risk. I don't go to to the dog park with my well behaved, trained, fixed dogs because of these selfish people.

We brought our dog there....and we shouldn't have. It was the first time we brought him to something like that. He didn't bark or anything- but he was walking with his tail between his legs.
Now we know better for next time

There's hope. We conquered that with very small doses at a time, and positive reinforcement (treats, affection) when he'd show any confidence.

As a dog owner myself, I definitely know that, and we did ask the owner, as we always do, but the dog was showing aggression before we even got that close.

ITA with all of the above comments.
I would imagine dogs who are not so friendly to begin with would have an even harder time with unfamiliar people at a large event like this.

My biggest pet peeve. I hate it when people bring non socialized dogs to the dog park in an attempt to socialize them. Then they are completely clueless and the SLOWEST to move when their dogs attacks another dog!
Really? You think putting an unrestrained hostile dog in an enclosure with many other dogs and people will magically socialize them??
Sorry, I've had my dogs attacked more than once at dog parks and have had one woman even say "Yeah, they aren't too good with other dogs but we're trying to socialize them."

Re: Unfriendly dog at the Street Fair
I hear you! I went to a 4th of July parade and there was a dog there who went BONKERS every time another dog came by. Growling, barking and attacking. This was a parade. There were families there with children. Thank goodness there weren't any kids sitting on either side of these people because they would have been run over by the dog.
I brought my dog with me (he is a retired guide dog - he is beyond well behaved in public), but I still kept him in between me and my family in case anyone who passed us was uncomfortable with a dog - even one who can sleep right through a parade
I don't think a giant public event with many other dogs and families and whatnot is a good place to 'teach' your dog to be social.
