It's not a Long Island lottery, it's a separate one for each school district. Both DC were in it, and I heard that last year there were more openings than kids, so everyone "won" the lottery.

I know it's by district, but I don't know if they have this outside of Long Island, little less outside of NY!!! But since this is called LI Families, I figured I'd address it that way. And sweet deal in your district with everyone's a winner. If only the real lottery worked this way!

Re: Universal Pre-K....who else won the lottery on this?
We "won" this year, but most kids in my district do get in, so I figured we probably would. It saves me a couple of hundred dollars a month, so I'm excited about that, even though it does make it harder to arrange for both of my kids to go to school since they are in different places.

Congrats on getting a spot. I wish our district had one - prek is not cheap here.

It's preschool for kids going into kindergarten the following september. It is funded by the government NOT the school's budget. You can find out by calling your central school district. Admin would know.
We didn't win- what else is new.

They do have it outside of Long Island, and NY. They have it in some districts where I grew up in Rockland county and they have it here in NJ too (though not in my school district, unfortunately).
Congratulations!

both my kids got in through the lottery. When it first came out I heard that everyone got in, but now I hear there is a waiting list.

It sounds like Univerasal Pre-K is a terrific thing .... what am I missing, why doesn't everyone apply for it?
Is it basically sending your children to Pre-K in your current school district for free?

Not every district participates. And with next year's state wide 2% tax cap I'd be willing to bet that UPK and K programs are going to be cut back since they aren't mandated by the state and it's an easy place for districts to save money.

Not everyone applies for several reasons. It's only a couple of hours long which doesn't work for parents that work outside the home. If the school doesn't offer before/after care, then they are stuck.
Another reason, they might not like the pre-schools offered. Not too many districts have an in-house pre-k program....they contract out to pre-schools in the area.
I was selected for my district. I didn't really want the school I was chosen for (you don't get a choice in hours OR school). I made a few phone calls and they were able to swap schools since someone wanted the one we got.
