Will you send your child to the Universal Pre-K
once they turn 4?
DS is in preschool now (full time) and I was thinking that when he turns 4 I will send him to the Universal Pre-K program at the school that he will attend once he enters Kindergarten. Its a daily two-hour program and he would be home for the rest of the day. Do you think that this will be a step back for him? Or will he benefit from it (i.e. getting familiar with the actual school setting, etc.). I'm so torn on this and I'm thinking about this now so that I can figure out the childcare situation for next year and whether or not I should register him in January.

Re: Will you send your child to the Universal Pre-K
Frankie will be going to pre school when he is 3 going on 4. If we had universal in our district it more than likely would not work with our schedules. Not sure what I would do if I were you. He would have to get used to a new school anyway whether you change it now or for kindergarten.

Yes, luckily we have full day universal pre-K, so I think it will be a great way for him to adapt to the school and its FREE!

We would most likely have baby #2 by then and so the nanny would be taking him and picking him up from the program, taking him to the park, etc. But he would be home for the rest of the day (his extracurricular activities are on the weekend).

Really?! Full day?! And you're in Queens, right? Ours (so far from what I heard) is 2.5 hours...

Ok, I need to look into this. Thank you. And if indeed it is a full day, well then that will change the issue at hand.

Ok, I just inquired and our district does it 2.5 hours. We can choose a center where they offer extended care but for the most part its only part-time.
I'm curious what everyone else would do.
Ro~ I hope he gets picked!

Re: Will you send your child to the Universal Pre-K
DD will be going to a private school for PK3 in September and then we'll be transferring her to universal PK at 4. There is a great PK by us and that's where she'll be going. I think it's 2.5 hrs a day every day, but I'm pretty sure they also have a full day program . The not so good thing about this school is that it only goes up to 5 and then we'll transfer her again to another public school, where she will be attending kindergarten - K8 (I guess, if we are still here by then, lol) But it's one of the best schools around here so she'll be fine.
You know CTK also has universal PK I think.

Re: Will you send your child to the Universal Pre-K
Yes I will. DD will go start Pre-K 2011 when she's 3. I'm in NYC and as long as the child is 4 before the end of the year they qualify for Pre-K. Also the Pre-K programs by me are full day programs so that is great....as long as no changes are made to the NYC Ed system

DS would also start at 3 since he will turn 4 at the end of September. I feel "cheated" now that my district only offers the 2.5 hour program. Hopefully by next year something will change! I hope!

Re: Will you send your child to the Universal Pre-K
I opted not to do universal pre-K this year and stuck with the pre-school he went to when he was 3 for the 4 yr old program. I didn't like not knowing whether he'd have morning or afternoons and I didn't love the options of schools they pick for my neighborhood. My son was very happy with his current school as was I and since I could afford to - we stayed where we are and are happy with the decision. I send him 4 days a week - one of which is a full day and the rest 2.5-3 hrs a day. In the 3 yr old program, he did 3 days.
