Re: Unlicensed contractors
Use a LICENSED contractor only!! PLEASE! We used an unlicensed company for a major project at our home (an extension) and it was a complete nightmare. When we tried to file a complaint, we had no case because the company did not hold a license. Pay the extra money, and go with a reputable, licensed company. I wish we did!

I agree with others that say the quality of work is not necessarily tied to licensed status, it is more the protection and insurance issues. And ITA that it depends on what you're having done. Most of the people I know that do painting, sheetrock, etc. are not licensed. They do excellent work and I would use them in a heartbeat. Why? Because I know there work, have seen it in homes of many people I know, they do quality work and will come back and correct it if problems arise. Now, if we needed major plumbing or electrical work, I would want someone that was licensed.
You should also be aware that if you use a contractor for a large job and they sub out the smaller jobs to other people, the guys who do those smaller jobs (painting, etc.) may not be licensed.
I agree with this 100%.
My husband is a contractor and there are times when his licenese does lapse (insurance has never).
At any rate, ALL his work is on referral, he has NEVER advertised.
I wouldn't base who you choose to do work on your house solely on whether or not he has a license.
I'd be more comfortable with someone who comes with a long line of referrals.

Re: Unlicensed contractors
never unlicensed.... simply becuase legal recourse would be so messy...
But it's not good enough to be simply licensed... they need a pile of excellent referrals as well

Re: Unlicensed contractors
Only if they had done work for a family/friend that I knew first hand. I would have to see the quality, the time it took and the end result.
For example, my brother just had his kitchen done and it came out AMAZING. I wouldn't hesitate using this guy.

Most successful contractors (both licensed and unlicensed) on LI work strictly on referrals and word of mouth. The only big ones I can think of that advertise are Allure and King Quality, and I think the high prices, hard sell and smooth talking turns alot of people off from using them.

Re: Unlicensed contractors
