Unreal! Newsday article today about the fatal accident involving the Police Officer on Sunday.
Did you guys hear this? Can I ask what is wrong in this country? Seriously!
If Jose Borbon wasn't aware that he could get a conditional driver's license weeks after being charged with driving with a blood-alcohol level nearly twice the legal limit, the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles made sure to let him know.
The DMV sent Borbon a letter after he was charged with DWI Jan. 4 informing him he was eligible to keep driving under the terms of a state policy that allows accused drivers - and, in some cases, convicted ones - to stay on the road.

These types of occurrences will keep happening until our legislatures decide to make DWI and DUI more serious offenses that involve serious jail time.

True! But the kicker is DMV sent him a letter?? Basically saying hey Azzhat, guess what, you can still drive- just in case you didnt' know.

And people will argue that he would have driven anyway... BUT that doesn't make it right. The Law needs to say, no, you are not getting ANY type of license. You gave up that privilege when you drove drunk.
There are plenty of other options for getting to and from work if you need to - people use them everyday: buses, trains, cabs, LEGS, etc!
If we don't start taking a no tolerance attitude to these situations, the criminals are going to keep taking advantage of the system and putting our lives in danger.

Exactly!! And the worst part is- the state is ENCOURAGING it. Sending a letter like that- REMINDING him that "hey you can drive- just in case you didn't know!" What on earth is that about?
BTW, Danirella- I saw you quoted in Newsday today- you are SO well spoken!! You are like a pro with the press now!!

Thank you.
The reason the DMV does that is because of $. It costs money for this scumbag to get his conditional license -- he goes there, pays fees, and gets the license. So, the state and the DMV get money from his "right" to drive. Driving is not a right - it is a privilage BUT the DMV and the State is all about the all-mighty dollar in some cases.
The news started calling me on Sunday morning... At first, I didn't know why until I spoke with my parents and they told me. Then, I had Virginia Huie and News 12 at my door around 3pm Sunday as our company was arriving and I was making spinach dip So, I was on that day but didn't see it (don't have Cablevision but I wasn't going to tell Virginia that I switched to Verizon )...
Then, yesterday Newsday called (how they obtained my number - NO clue) and they asked about the Officer and how we felt... My family, and this is basically what I told them, is sick over this... both of my parents barely slept Sunday evening as did I... I just can't stop thinking about that poor man and his family. It just gets me to the core because I can't help but picture Kenneth in that situation. It breaks my heart and angers me all at the same time. My brother was about TWO minutes from being in that same crown vic that catches on fire... he was switched at the last minute to an Impala and when I was told of this the day of his crash, I thought the cops were just trying to make me feel better -- but, they were right and the cars catching on fire like that is true. It is horrific.
My parents want to go to the wake - I'll probably give them the card to give to the family if I don't end up going with them because of work. I want them to know how much I feel for them - and that my family and I will never forget this Officer and what happened to him. All they have left is the idea that hopefully justice will be done.

It makes me SO angry and sad that there is ANY tolerance for DUI/DWI offenders. There should be MAJOR jail time after the FIRST offense. Then maybe people would think twice before doing it

Amazing how they found you so quickly like that. You must be on their list now! You could have a career in PR!
I can't imagine how this must have affected you guys. My husband is a cop and everytime I hear something like this I can't stop thinking about it and it brings tears to my eyes. And with your own personal situation still being so new and raw, it had to be so upsetting!
My husband tells me that at work he and his partner always take the Crown Vic- because it is a lot more comfortable and larger than the Impalas they have. When I mentioned this to him about the fires, etc he said he never heard about it. I left the Newsday article open on the kitchen table for him this morning- the one that details the issues with those cars. I told him to stop using it. What kills me is- they know of these issues- yet why are these cars not being recalled and why are the depts still using them? So many factors here that are just tragic and seemingly avoidable!!

Re: Unreal! Newsday article today about the fatal accident involving the Police Officer on Sunday.
Again... money, money, money.
Ford would have to do a MAJOR recall which will cost them greatly.
The Police Department will have to modify or change out all of their vehicles and since they are a financial mess half the time that will never happen.
So, they look at it this way: we won't do anything about it but won't deny the problem. IF and when someone gets hurt or killed the family will probably sue us and/or Ford and whatever the two parties will pay out in damages to a few people here and there will be A LOT less than actually having to FIX the problem, once and for all, the proper way.
This is the second time a PO has been killed in a Crown Vic in the last few years -- a State Trooper was hit, tried to get out, and couldn't get his seatbelt off fast enough. He died in the fire of the car trying to escape because that is how quickly they engulf.
AND STILL, the money they may or may not have to pay out to that poor man's family and this PO's family will be less than them actually FIXING the problem thus saving lives in the future.
It is sick and just plain wrong.
That being said, none of this would be an issue if the guy wasn't driving drunk -- which I don't want to lose sight of.

Reminds me of how in the city where my husband works, they were all running around in sub par bullet proof vests- that didn't provide side protection. It took a cop getting shot in the side and dying for them to suddenly come up with the money to provide them all with vests with the proper coverage. Truly disgusting if you ask me...
And yes I agree with you about the driver in this case... regardless of if the car was prone to blowing up or not, it wouldn't have been an issue had this guy not been on the road!!

I couldn't believe it either. I was not able to drive for 90 days due to a lapse in insurance last year, but people like this can still drive. Unreal.

I am for fingerprint on the steering wheel in order to get the car going. You could not do it for somebody else since you need to keep your hands on the steering wheel. Then remote access to a system allowing you to drive. If you are not allowed in the system... you can't start the car.
BTW, I don't know if they technology even exists. This is my own idea or how to take care of drunk driving.

I cannot believe the insanity of this!!
My DH was in Sweden with his soccer team and they were informed that the amount of drinks you are allowed to have before getting behind the wheel is - NONE!! This makes complete sense to me - if you are going to be driving, you shouldn't be drinking at all!!! It shouldn't be up to discretion of someone who has already imbibed or the people with them. What's easier to figure out than knowing that you can't have any alcohol before driving??

I was just about to say this...there are apparently harsher penalties for a lapse in insurance??? This is so sad
