Update - how to tell grown kids about terminal illness

Thank you all for your kind words and thoughts. They mean a lot to me.

As for getting this awful disease that cannot be cured's not being fair, as we all know, life isn't fair. Nobody should ever get it. There is no why, at least right now. No one knows why some of us get Pancreatic Cancer and others, Thank God, do not. There is no test for it yet. You just simply get told you have it. And, your life changes course.

I tell myself sometimes, if I can take all the shots for my family, then maybe my kids and DH will not get hit. But, I know that is not realistic either, but how I wish it were. I wish I could protect them. I have three cancers really, breast, indolent lymphoma and pancreatic. Doctors at both Memorial Sloan Kettering and NY Hospital were confounded and asked me to undergo genetic counseling and testing as they siad it was unusual for anyone to have three primary (unrelated) cancers. I did do it at NY Hospital about a month ago. I haven't been told the results yet, but they should be back soon.

All I can think of, with a touch of black humor, is that I must have done something spectacularly bad during a past life to have had this happen in this one. I do know that I have spent this life doing my best to help everyone. I have run more campaigns to raise money, collect goods or support a wide range of organizations than I can remember. I keep finding old clippings, fliers and notes about them as I clean through my older files, and the memories they bring back make me happy. I brought my kids up helping me, and drew in many of their friends, just as my mother got me and my friends involved in things she believed in. She got that from her mother. So, what we teach our children does get passed on down.

I'll try to come back occassionally to see how everyone is doing as reading about people's everyday lives is always interesting, sometimes funny and many times heartwarming. I do not think I will post again. I am deeply gratetful to all who have posted such kind messages. They have brought me much comfort and also sweet tears, to know that so many people can care about someone they have never met. Thank you.

I do not know exactly what is ahead for me, though I have to say I am curious. It will be life's last great adventure. I have gotten a lot weaker since I first posted. I have to sleep twice each day. No one is predicting anything. Doctors and Hospice tell us that every individual is different. I just hope to be kept pain free and have been promised that will be so. I am grateful.

Re: Update - how to tell grown kids about terminal illness

Sarah,
I think by everyones responses here that you have touched all of us in a way you never thought possible. You know when they say you can meet someone who can change your life, you might be that person. I have been reading and watching for your updates everyday. Thinking of you the same. Enjoy your time with your family. You are such an inspiration. Like someone else said, this has affected me in a way I could never explain. I will continue to think about you and pray for you and your family. I think it takes such a strong person to handle all of the things you're handling.

This quote describes you perfectly:
The most important thing in illness is never to lose heart.

I hope to have the heart you have one day.

Thank you for sharing your story with us. Know you have a sea of love coming your way from complete strangers... strangers who you can call friends.
