**UPDATE 3/23/09** Please Help...My Shelby girl ripped her nail and now it's bleeding...
I'm not sure what happened or how it happened but Shelby seems to have ripped her nail on something and now it appears to be loose and bleeding.
She's licking it alot...
I just wish I knew of something I could do to help her or at least stop the bleeding.
It's not bleeding a lot and honestly I'm not even sure how long it's been bleeding b/c she wasn't behaving differnently (other than the constant licking and tending to her paw) but I want to help her. Not to mention, she's bleeding on the floor and furniture (little drops) which was how I realized she was bleeding.
Please help... My husband says I shouldn't worry, she'll be ok but I feel bad. I'm sure her nail is gonna fall off or something. ****************************** Thank you all for your responses and concern, I really appreciate it!
Ok, well I checked her out this morning and it seems that she bit the nail all the way down sometime during the night. The bleeding completely stopped - I know this for sure b/c there wasn't any on her (or our bedding for that matter! ) and she seems fine.
She's doing her usual running around, jumping, licking us to death so it seems like she's ok. I was able to wash off her paw and really the nail seems ok.
I'll keep an eye on her but I think the crisis was averted.
She's one tough pooch!!

Aww your poor pup! Try this- I know when I cut my dog's nails I always worry about cutting them too short, though I know this wasn't the case for you (which is why they're always too long! ) but this seems like stuff you should have in the house!

pepper huh? maybe i'll give it a shot. This did remind me of something though. We bought a nail clipper a long time ago and I think it came with a powder...maybe I'll see if I can use that? Otherwise I may give the pepper a shot.
She's asleep right now so maybe I'll be able to do it.

The brand of nail clippers that I have is Bamboo (they're white w/ red on the handles). On the inside of the handles is a little container of powder that will coagulate the blood, otherwise it is almost impossible to get the bleeding to stop. If you have those clippers it should have the container of powder. HTH!

you need to put septic powder on there (although i'm sure you have it under control now)

I just saw this. How is she doing? If it should happen again, corn starch works like the clotting power you can get from the stores. If she is still licking it, i would call you vet to play it safe.

Re: Please Help...My Shelby girl ripped her nail and now it's bleeding...
Misty did this a few months ago, the nail was kind of half hanging off. I took her to the vet and he removed the nail, then wrapped her foot in gauze and a bandage. He said it would probably fall off on it's own, but the constant licking will make it bleed. So the bandage was basicallly to stop her from licking it. We kept the bandage on for a few days and she was fine. Nail grew back completely normal.
