Update on Us, Saw GI specialist today
Well the good news is that I liked the doctor alot. He was an older man and very kind and gentle and you could tell he really loved babies.
Onto the not so great part. In the last 2 weeks Miranda has only gained 1 ounce so at almost 8 weeks old she is 9lb 6oz and her birth weight was 8lbs. He wasn't overly concerned with this yet but we go back in about 3 weeks and her 2 month visit with her regular ped. is in 2 weeks. We also have to take her for an upper GI series on 12/1 to rule out any structural issues. I am dreading this. He changed her from Prilosec to Prevacid and increased her Carafate. We're hoping that if these can decrease the reflux she will eat more. She self limits herself to about 2oz per feeding. On a rare occasion she'll take 3 or 4oz but that is hardly ever. So she should be taking close to 20oz min per day and on a good day she'll get maybe 16oz but I would say most days she'll only eat 12 or 14. Its hard to gage for sure because some of her feedings are breastmilk but some days I will pump all day and just give her bottles except overnight and those days we'll only hit 14oz. So needless to say this is very frustrating and makes you feel helpless as a mother. I am offering her bottle and breast constantly but she just doesn't want to eat. She is "healthy" though and not dehydrated or anything so we're just taking things one step at a time right now. We are keeping her on the Alimentum for her supplement feedings and I still have to watch dairy. He said I just have to avoid milk, cheese, butter, ice cream, etc. I don't have to be completely dairy free at this point. Just no blatent milk products. We could just use some hugs and prayers here that she starts eating and putting on some weight because I don't want her to be labeled "failure to thrive" because then they start talking about feeding tubes and the mere thought of that brings me to tears.

I'm sorry you have to go through this. Although it must be some relief that you like and trust your doctor. That's so important.
I'll keep you and Miranda in my prayers.

Many for you and your family. It's always scary when you think your child may be ill, but you seem very positive which is great. Sometimes babies just go through fussy periods where they don't want to eat or maybe she just doesn't need as much food as the doctors think. I'll keep you all in my prayers.

I know its really hard and Ive gone thru the same thing that you are going thru except Bryan loves to eat but he just spits alot of it up. I dont think it will come to ftt- Is she growing in height? Some babies grow at different speeds. Also have you tried different bottles or nipples I dont know if this would help make a difference or not. I find that my emotions come in up and downs too, some days are good and some days are bad. Hopefully as Miranda gets older she will start to grow out of her digestive issues. Let me know how things go with the prevacid Bryan is still on Zantac.

so sorry to hear this.... it seems like yoiu are going through so much...do you notice a difference in what she takes when it is breastmilk vs formula? which has more calories for her? I don't know... I am just asking.

BM can be anywhere from 12-30 calories and I think formula is 20. She doesn't prefer one over the other. I will let her nurse and then offer her a bottle (due to my low milk supply) and often she will take the bottle but not finish it or after 2-3 hours I'll try to get her to take a bottle and she wants nothing to do with it. I can sometimes coax her into eating but this usually ends in a spitting up episode. Very frustrating.

Re: Update on Us, Saw GI specialist today
My brother's baby Alexandra has reflux really bad and for the first 6 months of her life had only gained about 2 lbs from her birth weight. it was really sad. but after 6 months things started getting better -- especially when they increased her solid foods ... so hopefully there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
i was thinking about you a lot today. thinking about how tough some days are will Emily, and yet she doesn't have any feeding problems. You must really just feel frustrated and at your wits end sometimes.
You and Miranda are in my toughts. I hope everything works out.

So did the docs say your niece was healthy otherwise? That's what they keep saying but I just worry her brain and organs aren't getting enough to be healthy. I am praying so hard that she grows out of this like most babies do. I am just so so grateful I don't have to return to work because as hard as some days are it would break me in pieces to leave her with anyone else, even a family member, right now.

Re: Update on Us, Saw GI specialist today
My niece had a lot of developmental problems physically. She didn't roll over until 6-7 months and is 10 months now and JUST started sitting up and is barely crawling. She's trying to crawl but not really moving around much ... just making the effort. She also had a hard time holding her head up for a while. I think that happened at around 4-5 months. But she is catching up and in the past few months she's progressed in a lot of ways very quickly. The doctors arent' very concerned about her development in the long run from what my brother and his wife tell me, it's just that some things took a long time.
