update to my w t eff problem
so, if you've been bored and possibly read my other posts, I was hired in July for a NYC school then called by the principal last week with a message of some problem. He didn't ans. any of my calls this week so I went in today to start working. Not so much...he said he has 2 teachers going out on maternity and can't hire me b/c of budget issues. He said that he can try to get me in as a sub w/my own 1st grade class, but no benefits and less $ till they go on maternity ?!?!? okay, at this late stage, I'll take what I can get. Then he tells me the sub thing isn't a definite, he's waiting to hear back from a woman at boe to see if he can do this. So he tells me to go home and wait for his call... I asked him straight out - do I have a job and he said, "I'm working on it" W T FFFFFFFF???????? So like a baby I cried...because I was angry and frustrated and have my son to take care of w/no health benefits...
It makes me sad that I moved back home - I feel as though I should've stayed in FL with my great school and horrible salary - at least it is more than I'm making now...
so sad, pity party for 1 right here.
there's my update...joy oh effing joy
****Update #2****
So I guess something is better than nothing...he called me back at 2:30 and asked me to come down and start on my room then I find out that budget wise, he could only hire me as a long term sub for the year as a replacement for a maternity leave teacher. He was able to get me benefits, but I doubt my pay will be teacher rate
So, I was very excited to have ajob then felt like I was kind of ripped off b/c I could've found a teacher salary teaching position in the month and 1/2 that he wasted to tell me the situation
either way, it's a foot in the door and he tried to right his wrong, so I can't say much more on the topic. I'm glad I know what's going on and the teachers I've met thus far seem very nice and helpful.
Thank you for all of your help, encouragement and support. I appreciate you and our teacher network Good luck to everyone else who is in a similar boat

What an a-hole! i am so sorry this happened to you. welcome to the dysfunctional-at-best NYC BOE!
did you sign a commitment letter? it's a yellow form that once you sign it, you are guaranteed a job. you may have gotten one at Court Street or from this bone head principal.
If you have one, you are GUARANTEED a job. it sounds like he has no clue. I would get on the phone with the UFT and/or Court Street and see what they can do to help you. this is not right.

I am so sorry! That guy sounds like a real jacka**. He could have told you a week ago so you could have at least sent out resumes to try to pick something up last minute....

I agree..I'm really sorry that happened. Keep sending resumes. I've heard of people getting hired in Sept, Oct and beyond.

Re: update to my w t eff problem
Where do you live? If you are willing to work in a Bronx middle school, there might be openings in the other two middle schools in my building. They are decent, for the most part. My school does not need anyone and we already have a few teaching fellows on reserve if we do get a spot. Let me know and I will FM you the info.

If you sub for 30 days straight, you should go on full salary.....check with the UFT rep in your school

Re: update to my w t eff problem
I was thinking of you and your terrible situation today - I'm sorry things didn't work out as planned but happy that you have a position.
Have you signed a contract now? Can you leave this school if something better comes along? Best of luck this year!
