1st ultrasound--its multiples--but there's a problem...UPDATE: BLEEDING, WENT TO DR.

Hello Ladies,

After having my 1st sono, what should have been a great moment in my life has turned into the most devastating decision/situation that I have ever been in.

I did IVF and put in 2 embies. Apparently, both implanted, and one split. I now have 3 growing babies with h/b's at 6w3d. At the point, it is too soon to tell if the identicals are sharing a sac or not, but that would also pose another whole complication if they did.

Both my RE and dr. have said that I would not be able to carry triplets and strongly suggested that I consider selective reduction. Based on everything, I know they are right and I know that by trying to carry all three I would be jeopardizing all of their lives. I also have a 3 year old who I adore and I can only imagine the affect it would have on her.

To top things off, neither of the two specialists that they referred me to take health insurance, so it would all be out of pocket, thousands of dollars.

The dr.'s also said that since it is early, the pregnancy may reduce on its own.

I hate this so much. I can't stop crying and I don't know how I am going to keep it together. After going through all of this to get pregnant, now this is happening.

UPDATE: Well, I had some light spotting that then turned into cramps and heavier bleeding (not very heavy, but more than spotting). I went to my ob/gyn and he told me that he saw hb's on all three, but one of the identicals (Baby C) was measuring a little smaller than the other 2 and that the hb was very faint. Baby A and Baby B had strong hb's. His opinion was that the bleeding is related to Baby C starting to pass, and that it looks like there is a good chance it will happen on its own. Obviously, I can always lose all 3 since it is still early, but his gut said that Baby C and possibly Baby B, might not make it, but Baby A will. The bleeding has subsided to very little and the cramping has stopped. I have a followup sono next week.

Firstly, many congratulations on kicking infertility's rear end!!!!

I know this is a very hard time with difficult decisions to be made. Is there another specialist you can see?

A friend of mine was pregnant with quads after IVF and her RE made her reduce. One embryo disappeared on its own leaving only 3. They then did an amnio and the drs made the decision of which embryo should be reduced. She never knew which one it was. She gave birth to two healthy baby girls!

My cousin was pregnant with triplets - one identical set and one single. She had some difficulty & spent a few months of her preganncy in the hospital, but she now has three healthy girls. Her high-risk doc is in New Jersey though but if you want his info let me know & I'll try & get it for you. many hugs & prayers for you Chat Icon

Thank you all so much for your support and prayers. This is such an amazing group of woman who generally and sincerely support each other.

I think deep down I know what I have to do, but there is still time and when I talk to the specialist in 2 weeks, she'll lay out all of my options. I'm really hoping it happens naturally. It's still really early.

One question I didn't ask that I wish I did ask is if I do the reduction, since there is a 4% chance of total pregnancy loss, when would it happen? Right away, or am I going to be on pins and needles most or all of the pregnancy?

Also, I'm curious in these cases, what the exact chances are that one would miscarry naturally?

I just wanted to say congratulations on your pregnancy first.
Do you have to make the decision by a certain date? Can you try and wait a bit to see if the number will reduce on its own? If not, are there any tests or doctors that can suggest what to do, which one might not make it, etc?
I'm sorry that you have this decision to make.

Re: 1st ultrasound--its multiples--but there's a problem...

The first thing that they recommend doing is CVS screening, which will determine which, if any, of the embryos has genetic abnormalities, thus helping the decision. This is generally done around 9 weeks or so, and then the reduction is done 10-13 weeks.

So, I go back to my ob/gyn on 6/4 to see if there are still 3 growing babies. If not, then basically, my body decided. If so, I'll meet with the specialist on 6/5 for a consultation to discuss the game plan.

Misssy, Can I ask how far along your friend was when it happened?

Im sorry, this must be so frustrating for you.
Im sure your dr.s know what they are doing and are doing the right thing. Best of luck and keep us updated.
How long till they start the process? Are they going to see which ones are the identicals?Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Diane--My next appt. is on 6/4 with ob/gyn and then 6/5 with the specialist. Maybe I won't even have to go on 6/5.

I'm hoping by then they will know if the identicals split. If we do have to reduce, I think we will be doing genetic screening, so we'll know if we are reducing one of the identicals or the fraternal.
