UPDATE: UPDATED AGAIN 3/18 keep your fingers crossed for me please...so nervous!
of all the companies i've been meeting with, my first choice emails me this morning asking me to call him b/c he's got a few questions. so i called him back and he said he's in a meeting and he'll call me later today (this was 3 hours ago....). I'm praying its an offer he's looking to make...please please keep your fingers crossed!!!!

So the guy called, telling me that they were having trouble getting in touch with one of my references and can i please call her. I say sure, then offer another reference. hopefully they call that one.
But when they did get in touch with my old supervisor, she (ex-sup) told me they had a nice chat, but then they told her (my ex supervisor) that sometimes they hire temporarily...this ad was for a full time job!!!! 
I don't get it.
UPDATE 3/18: I didn't get it.  This is so discouraging. Two months I've been looking already and nadda. And the worst part is, I didn't even find out from the company that I didn't get it - even though they assured me they'd let me know either way - I found out through an industry contact.

Sometimes companies hire temporarily to see if it works out. It's still a full time job.
If they made you an offer of temporary, I wouldn't take it unless you were so miserable which I know you are.
Wait for the offer, then worry.
