Update: When a place made an offer to you
Update: I didn't get the job. I'm crushed. I wanted it SO badly. It was my dream job and I don't think anything else will compare, and I don't know how to proceed now with my job search.
did they do it over email or with a phone call? A week ago they emailed me saying they would make a decision soon, and now I'm wondering if I should expect a phone call or an email. For example, do they only reject people by email, so if I see an email in my inbox should I worry? Or if my phone rings, should I assume it is only good news? Any experience with this? I'm dying here!!
Thanks!

Re: When a place made an offer to you
I've been made offers via phone and during the interview, which was always followed up in writing.

Re: When a place made an offer to you
Always in a phone call, then follow up in writing. I never got a call telling me I didn't get a job, I just never heard back.
When did they say you would hear something by? I was pretty much offered the position on the spot for the job I have now, but it took about a week to get an actual offer. I was told I would get a call the next day. Hang in there. The waiting sucks!

Yesterday was 2 weeks since the interview. The day they told me they thought they would make a decision I received an email from them saying that they are still interviewing and would make a decision soon. It has been a week since that email.

Re: When a place made an offer to you
I've always received phone calls giving me jobs, and then a formal letter by email or regular mail afterwards. Hiring decisions are usually made within 1-2 weeks, the smaller the company the faster it usually is (larger companies have HR procedures to follow, my company took almost 2 months to hire me because of background checks, 2nd/3rd interviews, etc).
If I haven't heard from a job after 1 or 2 weeks from the original interview, I assume I just didn't get it.

The only thing is, since they contacted me to tell me they would make a decision soon, I would assume they would contact me to tell me I didn't get the job. Also, when I wrote the thank you email, the person who would ultimately make the decision wrote back saying she would be in touch.

I think its a very good sign that they emailed you to let you know what's going on. They wouldn't do that of your weren't one of thier top picks. I would wait till next week and if you still haven't heard, I would send a follow up email.

So sorry it didnt work out. I truly believe if something you want really bad doesnt work out then another amazing opportunity that is meant to be even more will present itself.

Thanks you guys for your kind words. I really hope I find a job soon because I find being unemployed both depressing and a source of great anxiety

Hang in there. I was unemployed for 7 months after I graduated with my PhD (I think you just completed yours right?)

Actually, today is the year anniversary since I defended. Of course on my CV I put May 2010 since I was still in the lab working on my revisions/publication until the actual graduation, but it's getting close to full year of no employment.
