UPDATE!! WITH PICS..we did it!!....putting "peel and stick" over linoleum floor?
so we officially have the ugliest kitchen ever. we would win an ugly kitchen contest hands down. unfortunately there's no money yet to redo it so we've decided to do little things to spruce up the GREEN cabinets and YELLOW formica countertops and linoleum floor.
i've already replaced the hardware on the doors--looks a lot better.
now we want to put peel and stick tile down over the linoleum floor for a temporary solution. we don't expect it to last forever and that's fine with us. we won't do anything really nice until we gut the kitchen, which is several years away.
anyone ever do this? do you have to prep the linoleum at all? there's a plywood subfloor that it's glued to. i'm scared to pull up the linoleum because i don't know the condition of the plywood.
UPDATE:
we did it and it looks so much better! git it from HD
before: disgusting green linoleum
AFTER: with a shot of the rest of the kitchen so you can see how ugly it is

I don't think your kitchen is bad...I really don't.
I think my mom used the peel and stick I will ask her

Re: putting "peel and stick" over linoleum floor?
we did this in our kitchen! we had rolled linoleum (faux terracotta) floors in our kitchen - it was pretty awful!
our contractor actually did it (we were doing a lot of work on the house at the time) - he recommended using an add't adhesive in add't to the sticky on the back of the tiles...it has held up pretty well... You can buy the adhesive in small buckets in the same isle as the peel & stick - it is technically meant for that stiffer armstrong tile... It was applied thinly to the floor using a large spackle knife - let sit for a few minutes until it is tacky (not really wet) and then you put the peel and stick down.
The only thing that bothers me is that by applying the peel & stick over the linoleum it raised the floor to the kitchen even more...our kitchen is a solid 2'' above the rest of our floors and it just seems odd to me. When we eventually re-do the kitchen we will rip up everything down to the subfloor to get it down in height...
It cost us less than $100 for the materials - we bought something off the shelf at HD...
Hope that helps!!!

Re: putting "peel and stick" over linoleum floor?
We did it - it came out nice. DH did it himself one morning.
Our kitchen had bright yellow floors and yellow, black and silver zig-zag wallpaper and dark paneling. We took down the wallpaper and the panelling, painted the cabinets white and put down the peel and stick for a temporary solution and it looks a million times better!

Re: putting "peel and stick" over linoleum floor?
We did this. Although we pulled up the linoleum first. Our plywood floor is 70 years old and in great condition. We got these tiles that look just like ceramic. They actually feel like it too on your feet...This is just a temp solution for us but I like how it looks for now. and it really made a difference and was cheap! FM me if you have questions..DH did a great and thorough job!

Re: putting "peel and stick" over linoleum floor?
We're in the process of laying peel and stick tiles over uglier peel and stick tiles. We had a really ugly kitchen as well. old dark wood cabinets, silver zig zag wallpaper and this horrendous ugly grey/black and white peel and stick tile. We painted the cabinets white, changed the hardware, got rid of the wallpaper, got a new stove and fridge - and now are finishing the new peel and stick. Looks so much better.

Re: putting "peel and stick" over linoleum floor?
I know that you can lay them over other peel n' stick. I would think you should be able to do the same for the linoleum. I would ask the people at Home Depot or Lowe's.
I think your kitchen is perrrrrty.

Re: UPDATE!! WITH PICS..we did it!!....putting "peel and stick" over linoleum floor?
Wow - amazing what a new floor can do!!!
If you really wanted to change things up you could paint your cabinets white, get some nice hardware and then get all yellow and blue accessories to play off the yellow countertop.
My kitchen is a throwback as well so I've learned to get creative b/c a new kitchen isn't in the cards anytime soon.

Re: UPDATE!! WITH PICS..we did it!!....putting "peel and stick" over linoleum floor?
So I wish I had a pic of my original kitchen to show you that mine was definitely uglier. It was disgustingly dirty to. But what I will say is that we did temp. fixes since it will be years away before I gut my kitchen. But Home depot sells formica counters that aren't that badly priced. Because I think with the peel and stick floors it already looks great.
