UPDATED - SHE'S BAAAACK!!!! - Lexi is in the hospital...

I'm so upset. Lexi hasn't been eating well since Sunday, and at night she'd vomit after eating. She's a very finnicky eater, so I chalked it up to her getting tired of her dog food.

Yesterday, she started vomiting uncontrollably. The rice that I cooked her did not stay down at all. I rushed her to the vet, and they took xrays thinking she could have possibly eaten something she shouldn't have. Her xrays are clear. They suggested keeping her overnight last night, but I wanted to give her one more night with me (thinking it would pass). They said if she throws up or has diahrhea, then she would have to go in today. She puked 6 times, had diahr. 2 times, and was shaking and moaning all night.

I called LIVS and they said to check her fluids and see if she was dehydrated. I stayed up with her the whole night and it got worse. She looked so weak and lifeless. She even had a local reaction to the injection site (where they put the subq fluids). The spot right under her front right leg got all swollen and she couldn't walk without contourting her body. LIVS said this *could* be a reaction to the subq fluids, and it may be taking her a longer time to take the fluid because she may be dehydrated.

I went this AM and they did another physical - no visible signs of anything wrong. They were GOING to read me the results of the bloods taken yesterday, but they were STOLEN out of the med box last night.

They admitted her and they said she was dehydrated. She is now on IV fluids, and continuing to get Reglan to regulate the vomiting/diahr.

They said since she didn't swallow something foreign, then it might be gastritis or pacreatitis. I'm sick to my stomach over this.

First things first though. She's in better hands now that she's under medical care. They need to see if her white blood count is high = fighting an infection. They can't do much until they do more bloods on her.

I feel so terrible. She's a tiny 7 1/2# Yorkie, and just the slightest amount of illness is huge for her. Please keep her in your thoughts for me. Bella is completely lost without her right now. So am I. Chat Icon

Lexi is on the left side... (Bella is being her usually pi$$y self - she just "LOVES" getting bandanas tied around her neck heheheh).

UPDATE 8/2 5:15pm -
Called the doc and they redid the bloods on Lexi. He said that tomorrow morning they would be ready and he'll know more if it's an infection, etc.

He said that her overall demeanor is improving - she's not as lethargic - and she's holding down the IV fluids. He said they will try to offer her food tomorrow morning once the vomiting/diahr. is out of her system for a full 24 hours. The poor little girl... the last time she really ate was yesterday morning. Chat Icon

Other than that, they don't have any specifics as to what's causing her to be sick.

I'll update more as soon as I find anything else out. Keep those happy thoughts coming, please... I really appreciate it...

UPDATE 8/3 8:45pm -

The doctor called today. Lexi's bloods came back normal. They think she just had a bad virus, and the best thing that I did was to admit her and get her on an IV.

This afternoon when I spoke with the doc, he said she was bouncing around the cage, being her usual self, and he seems to think she'll be ready to come home tomorrow (Sat.). He said they offered her multiple mini bland meals, and she's been keeping the food down/in. If she continues to keep food down, then she'll be home with us tomorrow!!! I'm so happy...

The one doc there - the one who's surgery-happy - keeps saying that they may need to do exploratory surgery. The OTHER doc, the one I trust more, thinks it was just a virus (or maybe even pancreatitis - but NOT necessary for surgery). I hope the doc I like is on tomorrow so he'll release her without a problem.

Anyway, off to give my other baby some attention (and dh, too -hehehehe Chat Icon ). I'll update as soon as I hear anything else.

Thank you for your continued positive thoughts!!! It's been a real help...

SHE'S BAAAACK!!!!!!!!

I'm SO SO happy!!! She's doing much better! The doc said she had a virus - a 950.00 virus!!!!! I would pay any amount of money for either of my two pups. Definitely not an issue... Chat Icon

She's sleeping on a pillow as we speak - she's either up running around, or sleeping soundly... no inbetween. As long as she continues to get better, then I'm fine with that!!!

Thank you SO SO much for all of your support...

(PS - I can assure you that she's real by the way!!! Chat Icon )

Below is an updated pic of her godforsaken haircut. They transformed her into a CHINESE CRESTED!!! Be careful what you wish for!!! Chat Icon

Thanks, CAT.

I'm sick to my stomach waiting here. I've been sobbing on/off all day since I left her. Thankfully we're big savers - the estimate for her two day stay with iv fluids/monitoring/bloods, etc. is over 1k. I'd do anything for her and money is definitely not an issue. Dh is at work and I'm trying to do things to keep myself busy. Bella is mopey and following me all over the house.

I'm so sad... Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Wendy, what came out of it? Was it a virus, or something more serious?

Re: Lexi is in the hospital...

To be honest, this was in April and they never really could tell us. Blood work never came back conclusive. Max is also a senior pup and has a history or intestinal issues.

They think it could have been pneumonia but it wasn't indicated in the blood tests.

So he was admitted in the hospital for 4-5 days while we were away, came home and was better for a week, had a very scary relapse for a few days and now he's okay (he's got other issues again, because of his age that the mystery illness may have just made a little worse).

I hope that doesn't sound scary! Chat Icon

He's on a bunch of meds now - mostly to keep his digestive system healthy.
