UPDATED in last post! Has this happened to anyones infant?-UPDATED with more info

My nephew is 4.5 months old and he has bronchitis for the first time. My SIL just called me freaking out b/c he was on a decongestant and he had an allergic reaction to it and he passed out!!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

His doctor (over the phone) says he is fine but I kinda would go to the ER if it were me....that would scare the bejezzus out of me!!

Any insight?! TIAChat Icon

ETA: She just told me that it was Albuterol that caused the reaction and he had a spasm, passed out and turned red, and his eyes rolled in the back of his head and the ped said to keep giving it!!!

What? I would straight to the ER. Eyes rolling back and passing out.

1/ you stop the medicine
2/ you go to the ER IMMEDIATELY!!

I would NOT listen to the Ped in this case.

Not the same thing, but when DD had her 4 month boosters she came very close to passing out in the dr's office.

He listened to her heart and chose to admit her based on her reaction. So off to the ER we went.

I wouldn't hestiate to take her again if something similar happened.

I just got off the phone with her, he is asleep in bed with her and she isn't giving the medicine again. She said she is going to try to find another dr in the am, and if not, go to the ER with him.

And she is really upset with her ped because she called to speak to another dr in the practice and he insisted on getting on the phone with her and telling her that he KNEW it wasn't the medicine!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Has this happened to anyones infant?-UPDATED with more info

Thats crazy!! Albuterol can definately cause increased heart rate and vasoconstriction which could make him pass out. There is NO reason to continue taking it, he should be switched to half strength Xopenex which does not have the side effects albuterol does. He should be ok for the night not taking the medication, but I would definately be calling another dr. in the morning- maybe even finding a pediatric pulmonologist if the regular ped still insists on giving the med.

First of all.... WHAT THE F was that ped thinking in telling her to continue to give the medicine????

Secondly... I would be banging down the door w/Kristina like a flame was burning my A$$ if that ever happened to her - I'd probably have called 911!

Thirdly - I would be starting the search immediately from the hospital floors for a new ped!

I hope to goodness that nothing is wrong with the baby! Chat Icon

Re: Has this happened to anyones infant?-UPDATED with more info

sigh... yet another story where the judgement of a phyician (that all of us non-MD's should trust) is just something that I simple cannot trust....

ok, so here is the published drug profile of albuterol.

first, if this page is current, this drug's pharmaceutical information (as seen here says that this drug's safety in children under 2 years old has not been determined.

Also, if you click on the 'warnings' link (on the left), you'll see a long list of 'bad complications' where a patient should stop using the medication immediately.... While I'm not sure what happened to that poor baby, I suspect it was an 'immediate hypersensitivity reaction' as described on that page.

If it were my son, I would have second guessed that physician and gone to the ER for a 2nd opinion ASAP. some of the reactions to that drug could be lethal.... (especially some of the cardiac and CNS reactions)....

I hope everything is ok, how scary and yes ,I would definitely have gone to the ER and would definitely be getting a new pediatrician! That is completley absurd but then again not all doctors are good....so I am not completely surprised.

I want to say thank you to Meg, b/c this is exactly what my NICU nurse friend told me as well. I relayed it to my SIL and the ped is switching hte medicine and giving him a nebulizer as well. And now wants Eliot to have a chest x-ray!

So, thank you MCL916! I really appreciate it!!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

There comes a time when you have to throw your Dr.s advice out the window and listen to motherly instict. She should take that baby to the ER right now just to be safe. I wouldn't even wait until tomorrow.

We started DS on Xopenex last year at Christmas when he got sick at 6 months. We ended up in the ER and the ped of the ER told us to get Albuterol until we could see our ped the next day. We bought the Rx not know that is was Albuterol. We ended up NOT using it. We saw his ped 1st thing in the morning that next day. He prescribed Xopenex and told us not to use the other Rx. At 16 months, we are only using Xopenex if he needs it in addition to his daily Pulmicort regimen. I have seen several peds and a pediatric pulmonologist. They all prescribe Xonepex since it has virtually no side effects.

The insistence of the ped would really scare me in this case.
