UPDATED: JUST GOT BACK FROM ER...Blue lips, hands & feet
A couple of weeks ago when I was bathing DS I noticed his lips were turning a little blue so I associated it with him being chilly, I took him out of the tub and he was fine.
Today, again I noticed off and on that DS's lips and hands look slightly blue (I first notice it after his nap this morning). He is eating and playing and acting normal. Should I wait till tomorrow to call the dr or take him to the ER? I dont want to over react, but I know this can be nothing or something.
**UPDATE**
I called my ped. and he told me the blue hands and feet didn't bother him as much as the lips, although sometimes it is normal if the baby is cold. Being it happened a few different times thrughout the day my ped. told me to take him to the ER just to be safe and get checked. The dr's and nurses at Winthrop were great. They check his heart rate, ozygen levels in his blood, did an EKG and DS was so great, didn't even cry, although he was trying to pull the wires off of him during the EKG Fortunately they saw no signs anything was wrong, especially considering he was completely alert, not having any problems breathing, eating and playing normally. I do have to follow up with my ped. tomorrow and my ped. and the ER agreed that I should see a pediatric cardiologist just to be safe.
Thanks for sharing your stories. I am sure he will be ok but of course I am still a little nervous and keep checking him to make sure his lips aren't blue.

Re: Blue lips, hands & feet
I know that my ped told me that blue feet were totally normal and not to panic. I am guessing the same goes for hands too. I noticed that DD gets a little blue on her top lip when she is nursing vigorously or drinking her bottle...HTH

Can you put a call into the doctor on call? Maybe it's totally normal, but I haven't heard of it and it would freak me out. I'm sure everything's fine, but it might give you peace of mind.

Re: Blue lips, hands & feet
I am the last person to overreact to things and most things to me, seem normal..
BUT..I would definitely call the doctor. I actually read about this in my baby book...if there are blue extremeties for a period of time it COULD be the heart not supplying enough oxygen to the body.
I am not writing this to freak you out, b.c chances are your baby is completely fine but they do say blue tinges are something to check out as soon as you can..place a call tomorrow! Let us know how it all goes!

I know...I thought the same thing. just wanted to make sure I wasn't over reacting.

Re: Blue lips, hands & feet
im not sure how old your dc is but some dr.s will say its normal before their first year..my sil's dd is 15 months old and her hands turned blue and sent her to a cardiologist. just in case..but everything was fine..the cardiologist said that when you get cold..your body takes blood from the least needed spot to warm up the rest of the body...
HTH..just call your dr just in case

Re: Blue lips, hands & feet
My ped told me it was normal if I saw it but I'd still call and check.... mom's intuition is never wrong... I would never want to downplay something that could be hurtful.. but my gut says it's fine and not to worry. good luck!

Re: Blue lips, hands & feet
this happened to DS a few weeks ago. I got a frantic call from daycare because they were afraid he had a circulation issue. So i immediately brought DS to the ped. Turns out his case was normal. He is 4 months old (not sure how old your ds is). In his case the doc said it was just a case of him having slightly immature blood vessels. The body isn't getting the heat to his extremeties because it heats his vitals first. At least that is how it was explained to me. The doc said that if it was one side versus another than it could be circulation but since it was happening on his hands and feet on both sides it isn't likely. He did consult with a cardiologist and both agreed that since there was no apparent heart conditions that a consult wasn't necessary. I don't think an ER trip is warranted but for your peace of mind I would take him to the ped. One more thing, last week I was at the doc and she told me that the only time I should worry about him turning blue is if it happens to his chest and gums. HTH,
