UPDATED: Possibly the most bizarre question
So DH and I brought DD swimming in my parents community pool (it is 55+) today. My mom took DD out of the pool and was resting with her while DH and I were still swimming. A little while later another resident comes in the pool stating that she had just taken a radiation pill because she has a test tomorrow and cannot be around small children, so not to bring my DD around her So now Im concerned about BF DD today. Is it safe for me to BF her since I was standing next to this woman in the water? I was going to call the ped. but I feel like an idiot.
Update:
Just called the ped. and they told me to pump and dump for today, if I want, just to be safe since they dont know what pill/dose she took. Im so sad, I hate hate hate dumping my milk, especially now since Im having such issues with my milk supply.

Re: Possibly the most bizarre question
I found this but not sure it answers your question
Can radiation affect breast milk? It depends on the level of radiation. For example, exposure to the ultraviolet rays of the sun or to X-ray does not affect breast milk or breast milk production, so there is no reason to interrupt breastfeeding for either type of exposure.
Exposure to the radioactive isotopes used for diagnosing or treating certain physical conditions usually requires an interruption of breastfeeding for hours to weeks, depending on the specific agent, the length of its use and its half-life. Many women express their milk by pumping their breasts and then dispose of this milk until it is again safe to breastfeed or give their pumped milk to their babies. This action often is referred to as "pumping and dumping" (the breast milk).
Exposure to the radiation used to treat certain cancers is not usually compatible with breastfeeding because related compounds/antimetabolites are excreted through the breast and are cumulative, posing a potential danger for an infant's health. However, many women have breastfed infants born after the completion of radiation therapy. Some of these women experienced decreased milk production in a breast exposed directly to radiation. The radiation can destroy some of the milk-making tissue. The baby's growth will then depend more on milk production in the unaffected breast. (One breast usually can provide enough to fully breastfeed one infant.)

WTH? I have no idea.
I know when josh gets a live vaccine we aren't suppose to go around anyone with weakened immune systems...could it be the same thing?

Re: Possibly the most bizarre question
Seriously!! I was livid that she would say that to me and then swim in a pool where there are always lots of young children/babies. The residents always have their grandchildren in this pool.

I was thinking the same thing! But I'd be curious to know what the doctor says. And what a crazy person that woman was - stay in your house!!!

Re: UPDATED: Possibly the most bizarre question
I'm sorry that you had to pump and dump, but I honestly think that woman did the right thing in telling you. Some people probably would not have even cared enough to simply stay away from your baby let alone personally tell you the situation. I don't think she should have to stay locked up in her house. Although it was not exactly what you would have wanted her to do and although unfortunately it caused you to have to dump your milk, you cannot force someone to stay inside and considering she told you I think what she did was the correct way to handle the situation. I am sorry that it caused you a lot of stress and annoyance though.

I understand that she shouldnt have to stay locked away, however, she walked into a pool full of little children, I just think she should have maybe avoided the pool today being that there were so many kids already in the pool. She only had to take this pill for one test tomorrow so its not like she has to stay away forever, just for the day. I do, however, appreciate that she told me.

Re: UPDATED: Possibly the most bizarre question
Sorry you had to pump and dump, but if it is a 55+ community, you can't blame her for not realizing there would be babies at the pool.

there are babies/little kids at this pool every single day, she is at the pool every single day, so she knows what to expect.

Re: UPDATED: Possibly the most bizarre question
I would think that regardless - if you took a pill like this you wouldn't want to go near anyone. I wouldn't want to subject even adults to something like that and personally the last thing I would want would be a swim - maybe a nap.
