Bizarre question...
But, here it goes...
How would you know if you were at a swinger's party if the host/ess didn't tell you that's what it was? What are some of the obvious signs?

Re: Bizarre question...
Hmmm, good question! My first indication would be another couple hitting on me/us. Do you know for sure that these friends are swingers? Do you know other people at the party that you "know" about? I REALLY want to hear more about this party though

I have no idea. They are our neighbors - we all moved in at the same time. They're in their early 40's and have no children. They are constantly inviting us left and right to stuff we obviously can't go to because we have Alex to tend to.
There's just something about them that creeps me out, I can't put my finger on it, but it's there.
They invited us to a party last night, so we stopped by. It was a 70's themed party, and about 25 people were there - all single, early 40 somethings all dressed up in some REALLY revealing clothing. The second I walked in I felt a weird vibe, and people were just looking us over the whole time.
And in the middle of the room, on the coffee table was a big glass bowl with everyone's keys in it. I know when we were yonger it was to prevent drunk driving, but a bunch of 40 year olds. It just struck me as really odd.
I'll tell you this - we didn't hang around to find out!

Egads! Isn't that what's known as a "key party???" Not that I have any first-hand knowledge of that sort!!

Re: Bizarre question...
An obvious sign? Ethel and Fred trying to move into other rooms with you and your husband. Only thing is, Ethel's with hubby and Fred's with you. And they're naked.

I don't know how I know this, either someone told me a story, it was in a movie... I have no idea... but I heard that's what they do at swinger parties...
They put all of the keys into a bowl, you reach into the bowl and the set of keys you pick is your "pick"...
Wait, now I remember... an older friend or relative told me they were invited to a party in the 70's (like you and DH) and unbeknownst to them it turned out it was a swingers party. They said they didn't stay

I am totally picturing Austin Powers involved in that scenario

Yep there was an episode on Cold Case and it was from the 70's. There was a key party! You put your keys in and when you're ready you pick a key out and off you go with whoever that key belongs to!

Everything but the "everyone's single" part say swingers, but once you say single, not swingers.
Was there any mysterious cars left over this morning?

Re: Bizarre question...
Oh my goodness....
My DH and I actually have very good friends of ours that are swingers. They would never invite us to that kind of party b/c they know we arent in to that kind of thing...
But that party does sound a bit out there...
And Ive heard about the keys in a bowl..the women just pick out the keys of any guy or something...

Re: Bizarre question...
My feeling is your weird vibe of being checked out was accurate. You were at a key party! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lock_and_key_party Go with your gut. Maybe you could go out to dinner with them & start dropping hints like "I hate sharing food, I hate sharing husbands"

Re: Bizarre question...
for a swinger's party, there should be a lock for every woman and a key for every man.... and then they find out which set matches up

I take it back - it was half and half - some couples, some singles.
I didn't even notice about the cars!

Good point! But it definitely wasn't just for "decoration" - it was filled to the brim with everyone's keys

Not that I know because I have participated but have heard that that is a typical swingers party. Everyone puts their keys in a bowl and they are picked out by someone and that is who you swing with. I would have bene running in the opposite direction too if I saw that.
