Lake George - it's a long drive but there's lot to do.

Hunter Mountain
I second Hunter. There's some cute B&B's in the area to stay at!

Lake George
Ithaca (not really a tourist town but I absolutely love it - beautiful part of the state, college town, lots of wineries)

Warwick, NY We stayed at this B & B and it was incredible. Ask for the suite! B & B
Plus Warwick has a great downtown area and it is only 1 1/2 hours from NYC. HTH

I went to college there and love going back to Ithaca. There are gorges to walk/hike around, wineries, and a cute downtown.

We (we meaning, I ) decided on Cape May for this trip, but I'll definitely keep the others in mind for a fall weekend.
