Urgent... please help...

Is there a risk that something could happen during a D&C that could affect being pregnant in the future?

I'm just reading some stuff right now and I have a scheduled D&C for Friday.

I was going to wait to start posting here and on TTC but I REALLY need some information.

ANYTHING you know would be greatly appreciated!!

I'll be honest. I heard there was a risk of scarring that could possibly affect pregnancy in the future. That's why I went w/ the meds in the first place, but in the end had to do D&C anyway...I believe that's the main reason people choose to not do it...but does give you the quickest closure...

Well I found out today. The baby measured 8 weeks. I should have been like 10 though.

I don't know what to do now.

If you wait for it to pass natrually... couldn't you be anywhere when it happens?? I'm nervous about being out somewhere when it occurs. Or do you just stay home?

I should have asked the doctor some more questions... but I was too shocked to think.

I never had a D&C. But from what I heard the risk of complications are very rare.

I have yet to hear of any of the gilrs on this board having any complications.

I know there is a rare chance of infection, or scar tissue. Both which can be treated.

Don't worry, you will be ok!!! I guess if you are worried you can always call your DR. and discuss other options.

I just took the misoprostol. I did that b.c i wanted it to happen while I could be at peace in my own home. Also, I was afraid of the same complications you were afraid of with D&C. However, after going through the Misoprostral I prob would not do it again. I was bleeding heavy for days, and it took me 4-5 days to actually start passing everything...(which is normally suppose to happen with the first 24 hrs..) That did not happen for me. Also, I read the complications of the medicine afterwards and was freaked out too!!!

The medicine doesn't always work and then you have to do the D&C anyways.

So the good thing about the D&C is that it should be 100% succesful.

If I had my choice to do it again...I would prob choose the D&C. Then I could have it scheduled and be done and start to heal. You recover very quickly.

The medicine took days to work for me- and was a constant reminder of what happened. PLus I physically felt terrible for days.

Hope that helps!!

Personally, i could never pass it naturally. That is what happened this second miscarriage ( without me realizing it was going to happen) I thought everything was ok with this pregnancy.

But after experiencing the meds.... I could never just pass naturally.

For me in my situation...for this 2nd miscarriage I had no control. It was terrible and I was left to be alone not in the comfort of my home.

It is very hard to try to wait for it naturally b/c u do not know when it will happen and you may be at work, driving, mall or at home. It also varys how soon it will happen. It could be the next day or up to weeks.

I am so sorry for your loss.

I had a d&c in July. My dr said the risks were extremely minimal. I can tell you, I think it was the best option for me. I could not stand to think of having to pass it on my own, the waiting and seeing it happen would have left me more crushed than I already was. There are many girls on here that have had the d&c and have then gone on to have normal healthy pregnancies. Good luck, my thoughts are with you. Chat Icon

Totally understandable, but I would definitely call your doctor tomorrow and ask any questions you have.

I didn't have a choice...I miscarried naturally, and yes, you can be anywhere at the time. I was fortunate that I happened to be home.

I have also heard that complications are possible with a d&c, but like OP said, I know of many women who have had a d&c and then gone on to have normal and healthy pregnancies. Like Rachel said, it should be 100% successful, and will allow you to get some closure sooner rather than later. However, I really think that if you have questions, you should call your doctor, discuss your options, and decide what is right for you. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I too had a D&C in Sept. Dr. told me it was my best option. Baby was measuring 9.5 weeks even though I was 11.5 weeks. The D&C procedure itself was not too bad. I didn't do any reading before the procedure b/c it was just too much for me. I felt pretty crappy for two days but by day three I was back at work. The worst part is the emotional aspect which is ever present no matter what you decide to do.

I was able to get PG four cycles after the D&C so I didn't have any complications.

I am so sorry for your loss. Please let me know if there is anything you need.

Re: Urgent... please help...

Sorry to hear that you had a miscarriage. If I may give you some advice, I would tell you to have the D&C. I have actually heard the opposite that when you have a D&C they sort of clean you out so that everything is fresh and you are more likely to get pregnant. I have had three miscarriages, with 1 and 3 I had D&C's. The second one, I already started spotting so I continued naturally. I don't think I could ever do it again, physically and emotionally. Having to bleed and "pass" everything was very overwhelming. In your situation, where the baby stops growing but your body still thinks your pregnant producing hormones and everything for two weeks, there is no telling when you will miscarry. Like some of the PP's suggested speak to your Dr. about the procedure and your feelings.

I am sorry for you loss. With my first mc, I decided to go natural and it worked. My 2nd mc didnt go so smoothly. I also was 10 1/2 weeks but the baby was measuring 8 weeks. I had to have a D&C. It was scary to think about it but it really wasnt so bad. It didnt even hurt. I had some complications but it wasnt due to the D&C. I had a partial molar pg so I just had my 2nd D&C on Friday. Long story. I feel great with my second D&C although I wasnt pg. The risk are extremely low. I hope it helps.

I also agree with the girls. You can always call your doctor. They should answer all your questions. I called Thursday night to make sure I was doing the right thing. Once again, I am so sorry for your loss.

I had a D&C in March and I am now 32 weeks pregnant, I am sure there is a risk in pretty much everything you do, but I was not told of any risks that would affect future pregnancies before or after the procedure. I was 19 weeks pregnant bu the baby was measuring about 15-16 weeks, I had to deliver naturally and have a D&C. I got pregnant after two periods!

Good luck!

I'm so sorry for your loss Chat Icon I miscarried naturally and to be honest I wouldn't wish it on anyone. I started to mc at work and had to leave early bc it was such mess (sorry tmi). I bled very heavy for 5 weeks and it was emotional torture for me everyday. But keep in mind it doesn't normally take that long to mc naturally, I was just an exception.

Re: Urgent... please help...

Thank you guys so much.
This whole thing is sooo sooo soo painful and awful. It's just not what you think would happen when you get the positive results on the pregnancy test. And it's not what you think would happen when you see the heartbeat on a monitor, only to go back 2 weeks later to see nothing.

My mother is ringing my bell and calling me. I just want to be alone in the dark.... so I'm not answering in hopes she will think I'm sleeping. this has been going on for about 45 minutes so far. My husband gets home from work at 2 and I just want to see him.

Immediately after we were told I was upset.... but a shocked kind of upset. It wasn't until later in the day it slowly just kept hitting me over and over and over and over. Now I'm just a mess.

I'm soo scared for Friday.

My favorite stories are from the ones who went through this and now have an actual baby in the end.

I am so sorry for your loss. I had a d&c back in September. I did the pills first, but it didn't work so I had to have a d&c. Honestly it was the best decision. I, like you, was scared, but honestly, I was fine. The hardest part for me has been getting through it emotionally.

I'm so sorry for your loss. This is really an awful time, but you will get through it. I had a D&C in July. There's no way I could have waited for it to pass naturally so I had the D&C. Knowing that it was over was a little better for me. Once the D&C is over you should feel better physically. I had very little bleeding and almost no cramping afterwards, but everyone is different. I know its hard but try not to read too much online. Some of it just sounds so scary. You definitely want to be well informed, but you can call your doctor whenever you have questions. Mine was very patient with me around this time. Things will get better it just takes time. Just take as much time to heal now as you need.

I also sent u a fm.. Tomorrow will be two weeks since my DVC (that's what they called it) I was an August to be mom too.. and at * weeks there was no longer a hearbeat. I had done some research and talking before this to know that I had wanted to do the surgery... I was walked through everything and as hard as it was it was exactly as I was told. The girls on here were helpful and if you need me to walk you through it I will. The pain and healing is still fresh... but you do feel and get better every day!!! I am thinking of you and please let us know if you need anything!

Re: Urgent... please help...

I had two MC. The first was natural and awful.

The second I had the D&C. I found the D&C to be less traumatic emotionally than passing it naturally.

Also, I got PG 2 cycles AFTER my D&C with DD. It was the first time we "tried" after. After the 1st MC, I didn't get PG again for 9 months!

I am a firm believer that the D&C helped "clean me out"

I am so sorry for your loss. There is hope though and the pain does go away somewhat......

Re: Urgent... please help...

Im so sorry for your loss but look at it this way..

If you pass naturally...its very traumatic for you and you may have a hard time trying to conceive again mentally....

If you have a D & C beleive me..its in and out..the hardest part is physically and mentally being there ...the scarring is VERY rare., especially if you go to doctor that has done D & C many times.
This is all they do all day so they master it.

I did not pass naturally at 19 weeks., I thought it would traumatize me and I want to start right away again!Chat Icon

Hope this helps
