*URGENT* Queens Public High School?
So, my idiot brother got expelled from his school today for calling his teacher an unsavory name. He was already on academic probation so I guess this was the final straw. Merry effing Christmas from a CATHOLIC high school.
Anyway, my mom is a wreck, so I'm trying to help her find any information on any public high schools in Queens. We live in Middle Village but he's willing to commute about an hour if necessary. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
TIA!

Sorry to hear that!
I went to a Catholic H.S. so I don't know much about public...I can ask my niece who might know. My first thought was Francis Lewis H.S. I can find out though!

Definitely looking into Forest Hills- that's his first choice.
Didn't even think of Francis Lewis or John Bowne though! Thanks!

Re: *URGENT* Queens Public High School?
For public, I would choose Forest Hills first, then Francis Lewis, then John Bowne. I knew people who had some pretty bad experiences at Bowne, but I assume it all depends on what crowd you're in etc.

Re: *URGENT* Queens Public High School?
If you go on schools.nyc.gov and do a search for Queens HS you should find a document that lists all the HS with what programs they have, # of students, etc.

I agree about Bowne. Very "meh".
Try for Forest Hills first.

He might have to go to whatever his zoned school is which for MV is either Forest Hills or Grover Cleveland.

Yup, I think I posted my answer on the LIW forum. I went to Bayside but did Bowne for 1 year because my zoned high school was Grover Cleveland since I lived in Maspeth.
Hopefully those residency requirements no longer apply.

Re: *URGENT* Queens Public High School?
I went to high school in Queens. Off the top of my head: Francis Lewis, Cardozo, Bayside.
I would stay away from Flushing and Bowne. GL!

What about McClancy?
I THINK that's catholic
the ones that come to mind are John Adams and Franklin K. Lane.
They weren't the BEST schools, but maybe they have changed

Re: *URGENT* Queens Public High School?
I am a guidance counselor. Unfortunately unless he applied (which he didn't in this case) the only school he is entitled to a seat is his local zone school. I can tell you what that is tomorrow when I get to work based on the address (if you don't know which one it is already). Feel free to FM me .
Some areas of Queens have "No zone" and in that case they usually assign students to the "Campus" of their former zone. For example Springfield Gardens is "closed" but they have a number of "small academies" housed in the school building that students from the area usually get placed in if they do not get into another school.
ETA: Another Catholic school might admit him...When I was younger I know kids who got kicked out of one catholic school and went to another.
Also if his local zone is undesirable and another catholic school will not admit him Whitestone Academy is an option.

True. Jill, I wrote to you on LIW. All kids apply now to schools, so they dont HAVE to go to their zoned school, but since he was already at Catholic school, it might be different. But, I'm opretty sure he can apply for a transfer after this year. So if he gets stuck at Grover Cleveland, he can transfer next year! Good luck and Im sorry!!

Re: *URGENT* Queens Public High School?
I'm from Middle Village.... depending on which side of Metro he lives on.. he might be zoned for LANE!!! I hope he isn't. I was zoned for Lane. A lot of people are zoned for Lane. I thought I heard a small rumor that Lane was closing... but IDK if that is true or not.
Last I recall of Forest Hills was that it was good, but overcrowded and thus VERY hard to get into.
I don't hear the best things about Cleveland these days.
If he couldn't get into FH, i'd try for something like Cordozo. There really aren't very good public HS in Queens anymore. That's why i went to Catholic School. And that was 10 years ago!!
Is there any chance he could go to another Catholic HS? I know a few kids who got kicked out of one catholic HS and then signed up for another.

This wasn't exactly the case with me. I applied to Forest Hills and didn't get in. Not many were getting into that school because it's just about overcrowded. So if you don't get into a school then you would have to go to your zoned school or a catholic school. A lot of people don't get into the public school they apply to... usually you are applying to the FEW decent schools left and thus your chances are very limited. A ton of friends of mine couldn't get into FH either... we all ended up having to go to either Franklin K Lane or a catholic school.

And IDK what school he was kicked out of....
but Christ the King did take in a lot of kids who were kicked out of other HS. So it's def worth a shot... unless that's the school he was kicked out of.

You can appy ONLY as an 8th grader or as a 9th grader.
IF he is in the 9th grade you should contact your District office bc the deadline is DEC 3RD (this friday)...so call them ASAP.
