Using KitchenAid mixer to make cookie dough?

I've had my mixer for almost 8 years and have never used it Chat Icon

I plan on making a ton of xmas cookies this weekend (chocolate chip, peanut butter, butter cookies, etc.) and was thinking about using the kitchen aid mixer to mix it all up....

Am I making this up? Is this something I can do? Anything I should keep in mind while doing it?

You can absolutely use your kitchenaid mixer. I do it all the time for cookies. I don't use the dough hook I use the flat attachment. Not sure what it's called but it works great!

Re: Using KitchenAid mixer to make cookie dough?

Absolutely. I just made 135 dozen cookies this past weekend. We had two stand mixers going all weekend. If we didn't have them we never would've made even half that.

Yes-I do this all the time.

-Use the flat paddle attachment.
-Use it to cream the sugar & butter & then mix in the wet ingredients. Just don't let it run too long that it gets soupy
Put it on stir (the lowest setting) to add the dry ingredients ( already measured & combined in a regular bowl) to the wet (usually creamed butter & sugar with egg & vanilla) in the mixer a little at a time ( depending on recipe)
--you may have to stop it & stir a little by hand to get the parts from the bottom mixed in

Have fun!

Re: Using KitchenAid mixer to make cookie dough?

The best thing ever. I use the dough hook for cookies that require a bit of kneading, flat paddle for the rest.

I do have a hand mixer too that I will use if the dough doesn't require too much mixing.

I know!! What's wrong with me?!! Chat Icon Chat Icon I don't know why it didn't seem like a natural fit for cookies, I thought it was for more liquidy mixes. Can't wait to try it!

Re: Using KitchenAid mixer to make cookie dough?

My KitchenAid mixer has been a miracle worker around the holidays. I don't even know how I ever managed to make cookies without it.

I use the flat white attachment for the dough, unless I'm making double batches of dough (it's too thick for the flat attachment) and then I use the hook attachment.

Have Fun!! The stand mixer makes cookie baking SO much faster and easier!

135 DOZEN??? As in over 1600 cookies??? Wow! I cant even think of the logistics of baking that much. What do you do with them all?

LOL I was just thinking exactly your thoughts when I read 135 dozen! I even re-read in case I was reading it wrong somehow lol.

Holy cow, that's a lot of cookies!!! That's pretty awesome!!!! I'm pathetic... I get tired of baking cookies usually somewhere in the middle of the FIRST batch lol!

To the OP... I use my stand mixer all the time for cookies. Flat paddle attachment!

Re: Using KitchenAid mixer to make cookie dough?

of course..
I use mine all the time to bake. The best part is using the paddle attachment and really allowing the butter & sugar to whip up good; it's one of the only times you can get air into your cookies!

Yes, you both read that right. The funniest part is I never even used my paddle attachment, I've always used the wire whisk! We send them to family out of town, bring huge platters to work, give them to neighbors, etc. It's take 4 days worth of doing nothing but baking, and having two stand mixers going at almost all times.

Here's what the final product looks like Chat Icon

And that doesn't get stuck? I could see that making the butter & sugar nice & fluffy, but I usually add the flour right in to the mixer bowl & keep it on low. Certain doughs get a little thick- I wouldn't think the whisk would be able to handle that.

Nope, we use it for peanut butter cookies, oatmeal cookies, and even thumbprint cookies which are very heavy batters.

I use the whisk for the wet ingredients (including the sugars) and then as I add the flour I start with the whisk and switch to the paddle if need be.
