Vacation question (parenting related!)

So, we had our trip all planned out to go to the Outerbanks over the week of labor day---driving down with the baby (who will be 7 months at the time), dog and all our gear.
Well, last weekend we drove up to Canada to see family and it was a bit of a cluster---the baby was teething and miserable and it was a rough ride. This morning my DH wakes up and says he is not sure about driving down to North Carolina and maybe we should cancel (which we still can without a problem).
My question is, if we cancel, can anyone suggest a family friendly place to go with a nice beach that is either a shorter drive or not to long of a plane ride? We don't want to do Jersey shore or LI just because we have BTDT. I suggested Ocean City Maryland, but we weren't sure if that was super crowded---we are hoping for something not to crowded! Thanks for your help!!

How about Cape Cod?? There are some nice beaches there...and you can break up the trip by taking the ferry...
