vaccines and mercury??? concern and question- long
so my DS has gotten his first batch of vaccines at his 2 month appoinment, he got all three at once. after, he was very cranky and crying for most of the night, but no feaver. we ended up giving him tylenol. He goes for his second batch at the 4 month app. I asked my pedi if they are mercury free and she said yes, all of them are, except for the flu vaccine which has traces but that is being given at the age of 3, the reason i asked iis due to the controvery and concerns about mercury influencing autistic characteristics. My sister in law claims that they are not mercury free even if the pedi stated that they are, and that there is only a couple practices in long island that order mercury free vacciness like 2 days prior to adminitration. she said that its very costly for practices to order mercury free and most have traces. She also stated that her girlfrieds son acted the same way after each set of vacciness that my son did, and he developed autism at 18 months. I don't know what to do. I like my pedi and would not want to fully swich practices and also don't want to take any chances. I also want to hear your take on vaccines and this topic. I feel like i need more information.

No offense but your SIL sounds like an idiot #1 for scaring you #2 for not being correctly informed.
Not all vaccines carry mercury and b/c your child gets a fever shortly after does not mean they are going to develop autism at 18 months

You have to trust your child's doctor.
But do the research, which says that children's vaccines have been thermisol free (mercury) since 1999.
Do a search on here, there are been A LOT of discussion on here!

Re: vaccines and mercury??? concern and question- long
I just want to add the only vaccines that contain small amounts of thimerosol/mercury are the live vaccines for preservation, ie. the flu vaccine. However, studies have been done showing a child expresses or rids the body of the mercury rather quickly.
There are several books and TONS of posts on LIF you can read to find out more information.
I have chosen to give DS 1 vaccine a month and to not give him the flu vaccine, the rotovirus vaccine or the chicken pox vaccine (until it is needed for school) for a variety of reasons, but not b/c they contain mercury and he is going to develop autism.

If your ped says they're thimerisol-free, then they are....
While I am very paranoid about possible autism triggers, many huge epidemiology studies concluded that there is no link between thimerisol and autism.....
please ignore your paranoid SIL

Re: vaccines and mercury??? concern and question- long
yes I have done much research and reading on it, and will ask my pedi to see if they can order the vaccines to be preservative free, just to be on the safe side, i will also not have him take all three at once, but will do it one by one. its a stupid situation to be in, and wish my sil and mil would do their research as well rather than jumping to conclusions, or listening to something someone else said.

Sorry, but I agree. Dd got the flu shot and my ped said they have both with thermisol and without when i asked. Obviously I asked to give her the one without but I asked him the difference- he said the one with thermisol is less expensive so they use that one unless you ask for the other one.

Re: vaccines and mercury??? concern and question- long
Vaccines are allowed to contain trace amounts of mercury and still call themselves "mercury-free" but the amount in each is so small it carries virtually no risk unless IMO you start stacking them. That is why I am spreading things out a bit. I think the autism theory has officially been debunked so please don't worry!

Re: vaccines and mercury??? concern and question- long
Our ped. told us the flu shot she gave DS does not contain thimerosol. So I felt mostly okay about giving him that. I'm more concerned about the effect of these live viruses on his immune system at this point, since there is no clear evidence linking thimerosol to autism. In fact, since it has been removed from vaccines, autism rates have continued to climb.
