A question about racism

Let me preface this by saying NONE of what I am saying is to be projected or inflected or any other kind of ected onto the posters of this site. this is a GENERAL idea based on what I have seen on and been reading about.

do you think racism against Arabs and Middle easterners has become the new socially accepted way to hate?

do you think in certain instances we are using terrorism as a scapegoat for racism?

*If we can't keep this clean I will ask it be taken down. Please guys, let's be civil and grown.

I think racism has always been an issue, and I think that people who want their views pressed onto others will use any excuse they can to do so.Chat Icon

Yes and yes. Though I'm not sure that the latter is consciously done.

Re: A question about racism

Yes I do unfortunately.

A few years ago, I was performing a Cat Stevens song at a gig. And a guy comes up to me and says, "That's a good song...too bad he is a terrorist now."

I said, "No he isn't, he is Islamic."

It's a shame that people view it that way.

Yes. Absolutely - this is a random topic. It's been the new way to hate since 2001. It's stupefying that united racism/hate towards Middle Easterners pulled this country together at one point.

It's like racist people came out of the woodworks to show their hate towards them. It really was unbelievable. They became the topic at dinner parties for crying out loud "can you believe these (insert racist remark here)?".

It's sad.

ETA: I think people will hate based on anything. I don't think any "hate" is socially acceptable.

I think yes for your first question, but not necessarily for your second. It's a chicken and egg thing, I think...

Yes, and this election has shown me how bad racism still is here. Don't get me wrong, my head is not in the sand, I still knew there was racism, I just did not realize how bad it was. I mean, people in my own family I didn't realize were racists. It REALLY has upset me greatly.

I agree.

But unfortunately, I also think there is reverse racism at play here. I think some white people are voting for Obama specifically because they think they're being "progressive" by voting for a black candidate whether they believe in his politics or not.

Yes on both your questions, and I think it's only gotten worse the more time passes from 9/11.

Yes, I think we do. All the "Obama is really Muslim" rumors prove the theory--some people are honestly terrified that he is and will turn this country over to terrorists.

Colin Powell's comments hit this issue on the head--why should it matter if he is or is not Muslim? This is not what the U.S. is supposed to be about.

Some people are just plain ignorant when it comes to racism.
I hate it

I am a CAUCASIAN female from former USSR. I have a very universal look like I could be from anywhere in the world. Mediterranean, Middle eastern, Indian.(Olive complexion, big brown eyes, very black hair)
I have come across some ignorant people since 9/11 who have made me feel like I am not equal to them just b/c they thought I was Middle eastern. The saddest thing is watching their faces and their attitude change once I tell them where I am from.

Re: A question about racism

I think that after 9/11 people got scared and it is easier to blamed the way they are different (either if its religion, or sex or nationality or color) than to rationalize and try to understand what was going on..

Well, I think the biggest clue that we are is that while the OP wrote "Arab or Middle Easterner" it turned into a discussion about Muslims as a whole.

Outstanding point!

Arabs are people who originated from the Arabian Peninsula. 95% of Arabs are Muslim. You don't have to be Arab to be Muslim. The Middle East is a region of the world where Muslims, Christians, and Jews live.
