Vent, but sleep help (especially for working moms)!!
Ok, so its been 9 days of CIO and my stubborn 5.5 (almost 6 mos) baby boy will still whine & cry (not hysterical) for over an hour (a couple of times 2+!!!)
Now, I know the whole song & dance about naps and such, but it is so hard to follow a strict nap schedule when my DS bounces from my house, MIL, my Moms & a sitter. Yes, I know we have to get him to start taking naps in cribs (everyone has one). Its tough when I'm not in control.
I work full-time, I'm the breadwinner and don't get home till 7PM. Then I feed, bathe, play, bottle, bed my son. Then he wakes up at 2AM-3AM and won't go back. I gave in yesterday because I needed sleep. I propped the bottle in the swing. My DH amazingly sleeps through all this (mind you he does take care of DS from 3PM-7PM everyday solo).
I'm at a complete loss. I spend my weekends now "sleep training" ie, DS crying. I'm so exhausted. I'm resentful. I'm at a loss...
My DS is a great baby. Smiles, laughs, etc. He's always been a so-so sleeper. He's never been a napper. Right now, he naps for maybe 1 hour solid at 8AM and then does a batch of cat naps in the swing or if you hold him.
Not sure what I'm looking for here. I know Sunday and Monday will be sleep training. I need all parties to help (which they will).

I know your DS goes from house to house, but you can still get the nap thing under control. Does he nap on the weekends when you are home? If not, that might be a good place to start. I've really found the sleep begets sleep to be true. My DD is a great sleeper and napper. Once we put her down for the night, we don't hear a peep out of her until the morning. However, since starting daycare 2 weeks ago she is not napping there (I guess too much going on), and she has nights where she is waking in the middle of the night.
Good luck!

If you are not consistant it will not work IMO. As soon as you cave once, just know that you will need to start all over. If you caved in once in those nine days than you have not really done CIO for 9 days. I know that stinks but I have been through it. DD#1, I was a caver and she NEVER slept through the night NEVER!(not until she was 4 YEARS old) DD#2, I knew I had to be strong and it paid off BIGTIME We did the CIO where you go in, in timed increments with no talking, just shushing and leaving

Re: Vent, but sleep help (especially for working moms)!!
but let me tell you. I didn't cave in until last night. And last night, I waited 2 hours before caving in.
Before last night, I went a consistant 8 nights with my DS waking up and crying for over an hour. A lot of people on here their DC didn't still go 2+ hours 9 days into it. I did do it in time increments, but 2+ hours after 9 days???
I'm just so exhausted and burned out. I have my sister's bridal shower on Saturday so DS will be at a 1st birthday with my DH. Every weekend is something also.
I do appreciate all the advise and help. I'm so tired

Re: Vent, but sleep help (especially for working moms)!!
could it be he is teething and in pain.. maybe try a little tylenol before his last bottle. DD was sleeping through the night and out of no where she would wake in the middle of the night inconsolable crying... I have the same problem DD is the queen of cat naps.. there is way to much going on at her babysitters that she just wont sleep especially now that it summer and our babysitters kidsa are home from school..

Re: Vent, but sleep help (especially for working moms)!!
DS is 4 months, and you just described his nap/sleep schedule to a tee. He has never been a great / consistent napper. He will be SO overtired and we KNOW he needs a nap, but he will fight and fight NOT to.
A few things that you could try: 1) Does he have a Lovey type thing? Seems silly, but some days DS will just suck on it and play with it and doze off in his crib for a nap. I couldn't believe it.
2) On the weekend, when he cat-naps (if he does) write down the times. Ask your MIL, Mom, DH, babysitter, etc, to TRY to get him to nap during these times consistently. I have the same issue with multiple providers (Mom, babysitter, DH, me) so this is one of my goals for this weekend.
3) Could your DS be teething? You could try the Tylenol before bed as AP suggested...
Sorry I don't have more advice... My DS is only 4 months, so I have been doing a modified CIO, really just letting him whine if he isn't fully crying.
because I am a full time working mom too and I know how hard it is to function on 0 sleep!

I did do it in time increments, but 2+ hours after 9 days???
I hate to say it, but maybe this is the problem. I know for my ds, we could never go in. It only made it worse and made the clock start over and therefore lengthened the amount of crying.

I went in twice within 2+ hours. I don't think thats the problem.
I feel like my DS is always teething.

CIO doesn't work for all children. It didn't with my 1st. Have you considered a different method of sleep training? I know you don't want to hear this, but I think he's still a little too young for CIO. I didn't do it until at least after 6 months.

Even so, I think if he is waking up consistently and unable to get himself to sleep after such a long time of trying...it isn't just sleep training - he needs something. I know with both of mine, they were still eating once in the middle of the night at that age. He may not be ready to go that long without eating.

I have to agree with Morgan here. He might not be ready for CIO, or it just might not work for him. It's not for every baby.
9 days seems like a long time for him to still be crying at night for that long...
Sorry

Re: Vent, but sleep help (especially for working moms)!!
I don't think that it's the CIO that's not working, I thin kit's his daytime schedule. I know it's tough to get a set nap schedule when he's a different houses (I went back to work after 3 weeks, so I know all to well.) But right now you need to stress to everyone who is watching DS exactly when he needs to be put down for a nap. The timing will change slightly from day to day, but the general rule should be the same- no more than 2 hours of awake time before a nap. At that age he should probably still be taking 3 naps. My DS never napped for long, but 3 30-45 minute naps made all the difference in his nightime sleeping. I know that moms/MILs like to hold babies and play with them, not put them down for naps, but you need to stress to them that his sleep schedule is essential for his health- and yours!
