Very sad post, beware...
I saw Saving Private Ryan last night for the first time, and I don't know, I guess because it was about WW2, it got me thinking.
I've always known about my MIL's WW2 story - when the war broke out in Rumania, her parents gave her to a Christain family to pretend she was their own, when she was about 3 years old. She was an only child, and her mother died in a concentration camp, she never found out what happened to her father. In fact, until only about 20 years ago, she didn't know anything about her family. At that time, she stumbled across a long lost survivor - a second cousin - who had family pictures and letters, and such.
I was thinking about it, and I just can't imagine what her parents must have gone through. To give up your only child, your sweet, innocent, little 3 year old, to a strange family, in hopes that she will survive the war?
I think if I were in similar circumstances, and for whatever reason, I had to give Alex away, and then was shipped off to a concentration camp, I wouldn't have had the will to live, I really wouldn't.
I just cannot even fathom the heartbreak that her mother must have felt.
But, then again, obviously she did the right thing - it's unlikely a 3 year old would have survived a concentration camp, and because of the tough decision they made, my MIL survived, and gave birth to two incredible boys.
When it comes down to it, because of that one unbelievable, heartbreaking act of bravery, my fiery, spirited, trailblazing daughter is alive today.
It's just surreal when you really think about it.

I found those stories so sad before I had DD, but now that I'm a mom, it truly breaks my heart to think of what they went through. It's amazing to think of what your MIL's parents did, how incredibly brave it was, and now your DH and DD are living examples of their strength and courage.

Your post brought tears to my eyes. Since DD was born, stories that involve pain (emotional and physical) and children really touch me differently than before.
I cannot imagine making the decision to give up DD, but I would to save her life- and then I would surely die from a broken heart
What an amazing woman your DH's grandmother was......

I have heard some horrible stories from my grandparents and their friends of the war. It just breaks my heart to think about the choices some people have to make.
And it still goes on today. Its happening in Africa, Asia and I'm sure other places we just don't hear about on the news.

I know, and now, as a mother, it touches me in a way it never did before. It almost makes me just feel like vomiting.
I really do think that if women, particularly mothers, ruled the world, we would live under a much different set of circumstances.

Re: Very sad post, beware...
A mother's love for her child is just the most amazing thing in this whole wide world. And until I became a mom I don't think I could have fully understood the sacrifice and love that story holds.
I could cry thinking of how difficult that decision was...and how completely awful the world around them was that she had to hand her daughter to someone. I can't imagine how it must have eaten her inside though to do it...and to spend the rest of her living days wondering if it was the right decision...and if her daughter was safe.
But she saved her daughter's life and in the end gave the generations of her family after her the greatest gift....your little girl is one of those great gifts.

This is why I can't watch Blood Diamond again, or any movie that deals with children being taken from their mother. I too have developed such a sensitivity to it, even in fiction. I just can't take it.

Me too... I think the moral of the story is twofold - first, to appreciate what I have, and understand that I'm so lucky that I've never had to be put in this kind of situation.
And two, to never watch these kind of movies ever again

Re: Very sad post, beware...
I watch & read stuff like that obsessively as if somehow it would prepare me for tragedy or ward it off- every possible tragedy involving a child.
It was the moms who took their children to the camps with them, only to have them killed, is what gets me. I think after that I would give up all hope & want to die - hopefully taking any one of my capturers with me if possible. (Because I believe even in despair, I think I would be spiteful).
I think if I had to give up my child to a family to raise during a war, I wouldn't have lost my will to live. Even in the darkest places, miracles are abound. I can't imagine ever losing hope that I would see my child again.

Re: Very sad post, beware...
I can't imagine what she went through and how she felt making that decision. What a brave woman! I also can't bear hearing those type of stories without breaking down, especially since having a child of my own.
And I totally agree with you that if mothers ruled the world, this place would be completely different!

It's awful to say, but I think if I had Alex with me, I would be able to cope with the horror of the situation better, focusing all my effort on tending to her. To think of having her ripped away from me, not knowing, I just don't know how I would handle that. I'd like to think, though, I would have inflicted some kind of spite on my capturers as well...
