very upset with peds. UPDATE* SAW NEW PEDS
Yesterday I posted about how my DD woke up with a possible reaction to the oatmeal. Well I called them again in the afternoon, b/c my dd keeps rubbing her eyes, and wanted to know what i could do to relieve her discomfort (which i didnt think i was doing wrong). Well this is how the receptionist on the phone was:
Me: Im calling regarding my dds reaction to the oatmeal, shes been scratching her eyes constantly.
Recep: Yeah she is having a reaction!
Me: yes i know that, but is there anything i can do to help relieve the discomfort.
Recep: Well, were in the middle of office hours.
Me: okay
Recep: Give me your #, and Ill CALL YOU BACK LATERRRRR.. WHEN OFFICE HOURS ARE FINISHEDDDD!"
She was soo rude to me, Do you think I was wrong for calling? I know yes shes having a reaction, and has to run its time, but they didnt even offer to see her and make sure that is what it was. The poor baby is only 5m old, and obviously uncomfortable. Whats so wrong with me wanting to help my baby?? Well that recep. has sealed the deal, im looking for a new peds officially.
**UPDATE** I called my sisters peds and the recept was so nice on the phone. I described my dd face and she told me to come right in and have them take a look. I was soo shocked, i was like really? She said yes.
I just got back from there. The Dr. was very nice. Shes unable to say for sure if the rash on face is from oatmeal, or a flare up of her eczyema. She told me to stop using the soaps, and lotion i was using, which i had and use cetaphil on her face and aquador lotion on body. Im to wait a week and then try rice or barley, and then after those try the oatmeal again and see if anything happens.
For itchy eyes she said just put a cold wet washcloth on them, which i had been doing, and if its really bad, then i can give benadryl.
I was happy with this peds, so going to transfer her records over. I hope I continue to be happy, otherwise im back on the hunt until i am. Thanks!

Re: very upset with peds.
sorry that happened. i agree with you, i would have called too. i try to tell the receptionist as minimum as possible. she's not the doctor!! i immediately ask to speak to the doctor and if she asks me anything, i still say, "when can i expect to speak with the doctor?"
hope your dd is feeling better!!

Re: very upset with peds.
my pediatrician office has a phone menu that you go right to the nurse, dont even speak with the receptionist. It still isnt the doctor, but I feel very comfortable speaking to the nurses about this stuff. I could never tolerate what happened to you.

Re: very upset with peds.
You are definitely NOT wrong....In the past 14 years I have learned how to get past the ol' receptionist...basically what you have to do is to tell her what you want her to do. I tell her immediately that I either A. want to speak to the doctor directly or B. Want her to put a note up for the doctor...I then give her a brief explanation with my call back #s and ask when I should approx be expecting the call...or I call and say X is sick and I'd like to bring them in to get checked out. I dont leave it up to them....Basically b/c I know that Im not going to be happy (or rather less concerned) unless I have the confirmation I need from the doctor...Does this make sense?

Re: very upset with peds.
I would have asked to talk at least to the nurse.
Not trying to be demeaning here but she is the receptionist, not the nurse, not the dr. No degree is psychology, medicine, etc...She answers the phone. Period.

So sorry that happened to you
If your unhappy with the recept, i'd def say something to the doc before you change, especially if you really love the doc. Sometimes they have NO clue how the recept staff treats patients. But i would still def be looking for more.
PS-hope she feels better. My Ped ok'd benadryl for reactions like that, i have doses if you want

Re: very upset with peds.
i would absolutely tell your doctor about how your were treated by the receptionist. even if you've had enough and are switching, the ped can at least change the situation for the rest of the patients, kwim?

Im not happy with the peds either. I was happy with female one, but not enough to stay there. My sis gave me her peds #, im going to call them, like i should have from begining.
The recept. called me back a few hours later and said "Dr. says to do nothing, and let it run its course, and call back in 2-3 days with an update". I bought benadryl the same day i bought oatmeal, just incase. They said not to do anything. Thanks !

Re: very upset with peds.
I would have been MAD and asked to speak to a nurse. They're in the business of answering medical questions, whenever they're there!

Def change PEDs then, def at this point not worth the aggravation with your DD's health.
How's she feeling today? Better i hope!

Thats what blew my mind, when she said were in the middle of hours... I was so taken back. what does that mean?? I should call only when i know the office is closed. that makes no sense at all.

Still has red cheeks, and chin, looks like a bad sunburn. and has blotchy spots of rash still. Shes also still scratching at her eyes. Otherwise shes still her bubbly self, all smiling. Im tryin to have her nap alot today. I keep dabbing her face down with a cold wet wash cloth, the red spots are so hot, but no fever.

Awww poor baby (and mommy to see her like that )
I hope it's out of her system soon. At least you know if it's a virus or something it should run it's course prob today/tomorrow the latest.
It's great she's still herself though, they are tough little cookies sometimes!
keep me updated

Re: very upset with peds.
I cannot believe she said that to you!!! Of course you were doing the right thing by calling! You should absolutely make the doc aware of her behavior! But I would still switch if you really aren't that happy to begin with.

Thats my thing ALWAYS...if the front desk is nice and professional, then the office is run smoothly and the doctors nice and happy. And thus far, I haven't had any problems.

Re: very upset with peds. UPDATE* SAW NEW PEDS
I'm sorry that happened to you But glad the second doc worked out
Whenever I call with a question or describing something (which is very few times) they get the doctor on the phone right away. The receptionist doesn't give any diagnoses or any advice...she just takes the information, gets the chart and tells me to told for the doctor. that's how it SHOULD be, IMO.
