vestibular disease in 9 yr old female dog
has anyone experienced this? Our dog Libby has all of a sudden started listing to one side, head tilted to her right, very tired and threw up her dinner 2x since Friday. We had bloodwork done today and are awaiting results. Monday we have a scheduled appt for an opthomologist to see further in her eyes if there is any pressure on the back of her eye and if a stroke happened..etc...any advice/similar stories shared would be helpful..thank you! Lauren

Re: vestibular disease in 9 yr old female dog
Our dog Rocky was diagnosed with Non infectious meningo encephalitis. His symptoms started with a seizure and within a few days he started leaning to one side, head tilt and was overall confused and skittish. All his blood work came back normal. The vet then sent me to a neuro who performed a spinal tap and MRI. I would discuss this possibility with your vet as it's very important to start steroid treatment right away to bring down swelling in the brain. I'm not trying to scare you, I just wish someone would've told me about GME b/c I waited and had no knowledge of it. I assumed his body was sore from the seizure. Rocky had been 100% healthy before that point.
Here's more info about it: GME
Any questions feel free to fm me Also, if you do end up going to a neuro please FM me first so I can tell you about my experience with the supposed best neuro in LI. If I could go back, I would go to the Animal Medical Center in Manhattan.
Good Luck

Re: vestibular disease in 9 yr old female dog
Our old German shepherd got idiopathic vestibular disease 3 times starting at the age of 9. She had the head tilt, disorientation, vomiting and nystagmus (eyes going back and forth in her head) . With supportive care at home she recovered all 3 times with just some residual head tilting. Quite a common disease in older large breed dogs though no one knows exactly what causes it. I hope that's all it is for your pup and not something more serious!
