We will do it if we can afford it-with twins it is expensive. Although it occured to me that twins might be able to more readily use each others CB? Fraternal twins...not identical

I know $2000 is hard enough for us, $4000 is impossible. I don't think the discounts they offer for twins are very much, maybe a few hundred dollars. I just don't know where the money would come from. I wish they didn't charge such a huge up front fee.Chat Icon

well, if you really want to bank, you could do one of those payment plans, to lessen the fiscal blow.

yeah, I have to agree, the initial cost is mindblowing and it hurts. especially for new parents with so many other bills relating to their little one...... I have empathy for all of the twin parents on this board... to have to pay 2X for everything Chat Icon

I have a question. If this is such a life saving thing and Viacord, etc feel everyone should do it, why not make it more affordable?

well, I think I can answer that one...

there is a parallel universe of expenses.. it's called the laboratory. I wish I was kidding about this. I work in a lab and you would not BELIEVE what even the most basic disposable supplies cost. I have to sign off on PO's for simple chemicals (say scintillation fluid) and it's $450/case. Disposable glass tubes? well, it's another $130/case. It's like a grocery bill on crack.

then you have to pay the scientists. unlike us poor NIH funded researchers (who are grossly underpaid for our ed level), private pharmaceutical companies are expected to pay six figure salaries to most of their professionals... and give a rockin' benefits package. They also have to pay for high output equipment, which runs several hundred thousand dollars a piece, and has annual service agreements of approx 10% of the purchase price of each machine. All of the companies who supply the machines and the basic supplies seem like little vultures circling over fresh kill... very greedy folks.

BUT, I will say, I think these cord blood companies, just like the rest of big pharma, spend WAY TOO MUCH on advertising... and that surely increases the costs customers must pay.

Seriously, the whole lab supply expense thing makes me very cynical at times. Why am I in this profession again Chat Icon oh yeah, it's becuase I want to help people or something..... THAT'S right Chat Icon

Thank you. It is soo true about the advertising. Some companies overdue it IMO.

Thanks for ALLLL of your posts...

Dh and I talked it over, and we signed up for banking through ViaCord. I faxed the paperwork over and I feel good that it's done.

I opted for the monthly payment plan (50.00/month?) because that is what we can financially handle right now. I'm sure down the line I can change it once I go back to work and increase payments.

Thanks for the supportive FMs and all the input again!!!
